Cutting out at idle.
My GR tip has started to cut out when im idle.
It only happens sometimes and if I rev it to about 2000 revs when im standing still and keep it there for a few minutes it will be ok. Sometimes its fine and sometimes I start the engine without reving it and it just dies on me. When it is fine it just sits there at about 1000 revs and stays there. This can be a problem when I get to a junction and have to stand still. Ive been using my left foot for the break and reving with my right foot just to keep the engine going. Apart from that, its fine! Anyone got any ideas on what this could be? Alternator? Fuel pump? Thanks in advance. |

No man it's not the pump, and not the alternator probably. I'm 99% sure it's your stepper motor....VERY common problem! But easy.
Go to www.ftooc.org and visit the forum....make a search for stepper motor, or idle speed control, and you'll get an infinity of info and links on how to test, clean, or replace the stepper motor. Very easy job and just takes a couple of minutes ;-) Should you have to replace it visit http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s9p362 These are FTO specialists and their contact is a must for any FTO owner...btw my user name on the ftooc site is KEN.

Re: Cutting out at idle.
haha thats the exact problem i came here for! my g/f's is doing it.
hey Ken, you said just a couple of minutes, but what i found says take out the throttle body and test the connections with a multimeter. Is there a quick easy way i didn't find?

Whoever said you need to take out the throttle body is wrong. You only have to pull of the intake pipe FROM the throttle body simply to get this pipe out of the way to gain access to the stepper underneath it.
Then you will see the stepper motor there. If you just need to test the connections it can be done leaving the stepper installed: just unplug the loom and test the connections with a multimeter as described in http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jaycom/...ne/stepper.htm Should you need to remove the stepper to do it outside or be a bit comfortable, it's just a question of 2 screws...as I said a couple of minutes jobbie

Re: Cutting out at idle.
just for the record, that's exactly what it was and it took the mechanic an hour to fix under warranty.

Glad to see it got sorted mate, but your mechanic took a bit long at it IMO but at least it was under warranty. Did you have to replace it or just a good clean? The cleaning might have taken a bit more time then

Re: Cutting out at idle.
got replaced, they may have been able to clean/recoil it but they went for a new one, prob something to do witht he warranty, there was a $100 excess, but the part was like 300, plus a bit at the mechanic. could have taken all day if he wanted, we weren't paying for once haha.

Re: Cutting out at idle.
can anyone help me ...
I have slight problem my , I have a 1995 2.0 V6 MIVEC FTO GPX. I had the Stepper Motor replaced due to idle messing around ..this seems to have fixed the problem I was having at then time but I have another problem now ...when the car is wet it stalls.. it will drive and start fine .... but when I come to a stop it will stall ...but only when it is wet. What I find strange in your case is that it is only stalling when wet! I just can't see a connection between the stalling because the car is wet. There are other potential reasons for stalling like the throttle position sensor, apart from other obvious things like clogged fuel/air supply, but again I just can't figure why it only happens when wet Sorry

Re: Cutting out at idle.
water getting in ignition components perhaps. i realise that with the bonnet and all this is unlikely... but it might cause the problem.

Dunno but the fact of it being wet might just be a coincidence perhaps and the problem is something else, for example clogged fuel (filter, lines, pump, injector, etc.) or air (filter, incorrect fitment of variable inlet manifold motor. Before changing the stepper has anybody fiddled with the idle screw? Perhaps the idling is too low and in the wet you might have lights, wipers, and perhaps demisters on so the load on the engine might be too much then for an incorrect idle speed and it stalls. Also are you sure the stepper is plugged in correctly, do you hear it functio when you switch on/off the engine?

Re: Cutting out at idle.
I have 2001 Celica GT, Auto, Injen intake, TRD exhaust...
I have the same problem of the car stuttering and losing power but only when it's raining or very wet outside. Did the poster who has the same problem ever figure this out? I've brought the car in to the mechanic and I get the same response that they can't duplicate the problem and there's nothing they can do. I've thought of buying a waterproof cover for the air filter but I'm not convinced that that's the problem and I don't want to go throwing money away at every possible suspect. Also, the engine blew last year during a thunderstorm (my fiance was driving so I'm not certain what it was doing before it went kablooey) and when the mechanics did the post-mortem on the engine they didn't find anywater in the engine and they blamed it on valve-float. |
