Spark plug trouble

I have a stripped spark plug hole in 90' celeb 3.1. Car has 250,000 mi and I really don't want to change head. I tried a friend's tool which is suppose to clean thread hole but plug too loose and leaks when engine runs. I once got a kit to fix threads on an outboard motor I had, and it worked great. Does anyone know if can get something like this for auto?

Re: Spark plug trouble

You should be able to tap out the hole a bit and install a helicoil. I've never done it before but they taught me how in auto shop...12 years ago...

I hope I don't have to perform this task...but there's plenty of how-tos online for how to install it and the helicoil should come with instructions...

Re: Spark plug trouble

Thank you. I couldn't remember the name (helicoil). This did work great on my old outboard. Now I know what to ask for! Thanks again!!

Re: Spark plug trouble

Be careful trying a helicoil with the head still on the engine, as metal shavings can get into the cylider and ruin the engine. I suggest taking the head off, but since the car has so many miles, that may not be worthwhile. Put grease in the flutes of the tap, and remove and clean it every couple of turns. This will keep as much of the shavings out of the engine as possible. Then take a small piece of rubber hose that will fit down in the cylinder through the spark plug hole, and attach it to your vacuum cleaner hose (duct tape or similar "engineering" will do the trick) to suck out any possible escapees. When you're done, change the oil as soon as practical.
