Re: 60ft Times with street tires.

Zgringo, nice post. That must have been awesome racing with the people (who are pioneers of the sport) that you raced with! WJ is giving it up next year, which is kinda sad. He has always been the one driver I pull for the most in Pro Stock.

You're right about the details. The thigns you mentioned are very cheap hp add ons, such as electric fans and water pump (my car has both, but its a full fledge track car, lol). You can go extreme with a dry oiling system as well, but alot will be riding on that belt that drives the pump.

About the only thing else I could do weight wise for my car would be to change the tube frame and roll cage. Both are made out of pretty big pipe, which is good for safety, but makes the car weigh too much (I think it weighs about 2700 lbs w/out a driver, which is too much considering most Vegas weigh 2500 lbs or less when made to race). It already has fiberglass doors, hatch, and front end.

Now I coudl do alot with the rotating mass. The rear wheels don't weight that much, but the front wheels are just "normal" 14 inch wheels with P195/75/R14 radial tires. I need a set of 15x4 drag fronts. That woudl improve my time probably be a half a tenth or so in the 330.

A true race car doesn't need tinted windows, lol, but now I do like tinted windows on daily drivers (I drive a 4WD truck, so by no means do I think or want it to be a racecar).

Mr.Chevytruck92, I was just giving a little background and didn't mean for you but everyone. I have a dry sump on my pro car with a oil pressure safety switch so if the pressure drops it cuts the fuel and ignition.
When I was refering to removing weight that was a general statement. Years ago when I was running Pro stock, Plymouth would acid our car bodys to lighten the car a couple 100lbs.
Rotating weight and static weight are killers. Next time your going to the bowling alley take a tennis ball with you. Grab a blowing ball and twist it back and forth, do the same to the tennis ball. Lota fuckin difference. That's what our poor fuckin engines have to put up with. I've seen guys into the weight thing so far they wore the lightest tennis shoes and clothes they could find. Remove the entire interior and replace it with felt like a speaker box. There lotta shit on a car when you think about we don't need, and it takes power to move.

Sorry for the confusion. I knew you weren't directing the post directly at me, lol. I was just sort of telling you that I had indeed done most of that (well, I never, my uncle and dad mainly did it, lol, I wasnt hardly old enough to do anything serious with a car when it was built, lol).

Did your uncle and dad turn the car over to you?
Did they build a new Car? if so what kind?

Yeah, it was my uncle's car. He paid for everything and did some work. My dad did most of the major work, things that involved welding and major mechanic work. In fact, him and my uncle had built every engine we've ever run up untill this one, lol.

To answer your question, the car is mine now I reckon. Its really cool to get a complete racecar gave to ya, lol. Trouble is, I'm a senior in college, so I ca'nt really pay for anything major, lol, but atleast I dont have to start from scratch!

My uncle bought another car. It's a 1976 Chevrolet Vega. It's got a professionally built tube frame, with ladder bar rear suspension, disc brakes, etc. It has a very stout 302 with a powerglide tranny. I seen a ticket that the guy who used to have it that was run this year at Rogersville, TN in the 1/8th mile (I think its Cherokee Dragway or something like that). And it ran 6.53 @ 104 mph, wiith a 1.44 60ft. Now my uncle only got to race it twiced this season, and his best 60ft at our local track was 1.43. How he did that is behond me becuase the chords were showing in the slicks, and our local track does not hook very good compared to most other tracks. Its a very nice car, its set up really good. I don't know who actually built it, but I reckon whoever built it, let it set for like 10 years or more, and never run it and just sold it to the guy we bought it from. There is a picture of the new car. It has some decals on it now however.

Thats one nice Vega and quick too. Has faster 60ft. than me but lacking in the 1/8th.
I have a group wanting to come on board with $$$$ and have me build a Pro Mod Import. I have the body and frame, but damn thats alot of work. I'm kinda enjoying just setting back and enjoying doing nothing right now. My one car is just about finished. All I really need to do is install the ehgine and do some run tuning, and what ever changes needs to be done. It has damn near twich the power as my old car. Should be fun to drive.

Re: 60ft Times with street tires.

Thanks man. Funny thing, the white car pulls the front tires pretty hard off the ground, but the red one just shoots straight out, lol. I leave at 3400 rpms, and he leaves at whatever the torque converter will stall at. Its set up real nice.

Good luck with building a new car if you do, lol. It will no doubt be alot of work though.

Re: 60ft Times with street tires.

My best on Kumho Ecsta MX's was 2.193.

I have Nitto 555r DR's on it now, but haven't gotten a chance to run.

Re: 60ft Times with street tires.

2.228 on 245/50/16 Potenza RE750s @ 30psi. 60s got worse as I lowered the pressure to see if that would help. Our 1/8th isn't a real track, so even those on slicks have traction troubles (just not as much as street tires or DRs) But it's still fun!

My best 60' on street tires is 1.93, that was on the stock Goodyear RSA's with about 35K miles on 'em. 22psi, left the line at about 1000rpm, rolled into the throttle pretty quick. That was at Cecil, with awesome prep (I tried it again at Atco with new BFG's, 2.6 60', ran 14.0@110 LOL). Best short time on MT ET Streets is 1.73, hoping for 1.6's this year with new slicks (switched to Hoosiers), some more suspension tweaks, and maybe a higher stall (running a 2800 stall right now, thinking about going up to 32-3500).

60 ft

My best 60ft on the new mickey thompson et street's was 1.411, that pass was a 9.50 with my turbo corvette.
On my turbo nova my best 60ft was a 1.32 on the same tires but 1 inch wider, it turned an 8.70
Look for me in the 2005 Pump Gas drags. I will have the red turbo nova

Re: Re: 60ft Times with street tires.

My best 60' on street tires was a 1.69...... I think the track preparation is key.... we had the track rented that night for 8 of us..... and it was very sticky.... on regular test and tune nights, my best was a 1.83....

here is my slip:

Even though this is a few pages back I feel like the comment from 96TSi was just a humorous comment not meant to antogonize anyone. Although a bit cynical (sp?) it's awful truthful for a lot of people (me included). As for making up ground at the end with two wheel drive pulling 2.1 2.0 I'll say that cars with simliar power at the crank won't make up the difference of an awd launch . This just applies to MOST 2wd cars who have typical 2wd launch times unlike that of the mr2. Good launches can come at the expense of not even making down the track though as a result of busted trannies once again not directed toward EVERY awd car .

Enough of that anyways I have ran a best of 2.41 in the 60' with my sentra which has a viscous lsd. I certainly think they would be better if not for the mismatched tires.

My borther has a 02' duramax with 350whp and 650 wheel torque, and he pulls consistent 1.8s on his nitto "grappler" street tires 4wd of course.

Friend of mine has a 72' buick skylark, and with an open dif he pulled 2.38s as a best, and with posi he pulls 2.1s.

Re: 60ft Times with street tires.

I typically run 2.2 - 2.3 sec. 60' in my 01 WS6. Gotta slip the clutch alot for a 2.2 sec. though. Gonna see what the BFG DR's do for my 60' time. I'm hoping to shave off 2 tenths of a sec.
