Check Engine

THe check engine light came on on my wife's Santa Fe one day, so we brought it in. They blamed in on the gas cap not being fastened properly.

The reason I ask is because just yesterday, the check engine light came on on my XG. Well, I just ran the car through the car wash, so i checked the gas cap, hoping it was the same problem. I noticed the gas cap was a bit frozen (it has been like 5 degrees around here!). Could there be a venting problem if water froze around/in the cap?

Bottom line is, is there a way to reset the check engine light, and then if it comes back on, it's a whole different issue? Can i simply disconnect the battery for a bit?

If you tighten the gas cap, the check engine light usually goes off after time. I think it's 20 cycles of the pressure test before it will, but I don't remember for sure. You can try disconnecting the battery as well, that might turn it off sooner for you. When was the last time you got gas? Usually if the gas cap is loose, the check engine light will come on pretty quick.

Well, disconnecting the battery worked, the light went right out! I figure it was a combination of me just getting gas and then getting a car wash when it was about 10 degrees!

Thanks so much for the help lowsonoma1999.

if you have a newer xg just take it to a dealer 5yr 60k coverage second owner best warrenty around if it is evap related they have been known to get a restricted evap air filter located drivers side next to charcoal cannister and like lowsonoma said their purge valves intermitttingly can fail causing problems
