1999 2.4L serpentine idler pulley bolt
Ok I need some help getting the idler pulley bolt off so I can replace the tensioner idler pulley. When I turn it counterclockwise it relieves the tension to take off the belt. To take the bolt out I have to keep turning it counterclockwise, but how do I keep it from moving up to loosen the bolt! Pita.

Re: 1999 2.4L serpentine idler pulley bolt
So, are you trying to replace the pully that is on the tensioner? I was not aware that you could just get that pully and that the whole tensioner assy needed to be replaced. The alternator will need to come off, then there are three bolts that hold the tensioner on. There is no "idler" pully on that eng. Belt runs around the tensioner, alternator, a/c compressor and crank.
If you do actually have just a pully to put on the tensioner, the bolt may be a left hand thread. Meaning turn clockwise to loosen and counter clockwise to tighten. |

Yes the pulley is bolted to the tensioner assembly. I went and got the part from AutoZone (just the plastic pulley). I just cant get the bolt to come loose. I guess I will try turning it clockwise. Thanks.

Remove the tensionner, put in a vice, then no more issue... I replaced mine 3 years ago, I think it was standard threads.

Re: 1999 2.4L serpentine idler pulley bolt
So it's not possible to take it off without having to remove the tensioner from the car?

Re: 1999 2.4L serpentine idler pulley bolt
never said it's not possible, it is possible, but can be a pita. Try to immobilise the tensionner... but then think of when you will reassemble all... it ends up to be easier to remove the tensionner than trying to work around it... And you will be more sure that the bolt is well fastened and tight enought when you reassemble.

Re: 1999 2.4L serpentine idler pulley bolt
FINALLY!! I was about to just give up and return my new part but... the damn thing is reverse thread! And you will have to use a 15 mm wrench to get it off. Hopefully this can help someone in the future and save you some time. And I didn't have to remove the whole tensioner assembly. Thank you guys for your input!
