Flame on Baby Flame on!!
I have a performance question *winces in anticipation of flames to come* If this board is anything like the others I frequent you no doubt are tired of people asking how to get more hp out of there X. I can't help it.. My X is gutless, like all yours no doubt, and since I do most of my wheeling above 8000ft im worse off than most. I read once about a company which could reprogram my computer chip or make a new one, can't remember the details, The chip promised to greatly increase performance at only a small cost to gas mileage and in combination with other performance bolt ons could get you to 210 hp... I've long since forgot who the maker is. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Nothing to see here move on
SLR markets a bunch of engine mods that seem to promise a noticeable increase in power. They will off course lead to a noticeable decrease in the amount of money in your wallet .
My X isn't gutless. Yeah I'm not going to win the quarter mile but there's more then enough power to get the job done. Gee if I wanted to win the stop light grad prix I would have kept my Acura :smoker2: . |

LOL! well that explains your oppinion. Anyone who thinks to mention an Accura as a model of power would of course consider the X to have a sufficient power plant. However in comparrison to other vehicles of similar size and wieght the Xterra is "Gutless" In fact as you mentioned most passenger cars have equal or greater power than the much heavier SUV. Some may say the Xterra is "powerfull enough" and for some it is. For those of us who are used to passing while going up hill or powering through thick mud holes it is not.
Im not complaining about the Xterra like all vehicles it has its strenghts and weaknesses, thats what the aftermarket is for. |

Perhaps you would be interested in the 355hp ML55-AMG Mercedes?

And if that's not enough. How about the Lamborghini LM002 with 455hp?

I was thinking more along the lines of the Jeap Cherokee or perhaps the Dodge Durango. Ill even be happier with the power plant in the new Land Rover Freelander for that matter.

Install a Gibson exhaust system and an electric fan(Flexalite Black Magic 150)..I was surprised how much more power I had in Colorado this year even though I had bigger tires.
As far as reprogramming your computer don't even think about it until you have done all your other power mods, they need to know all this when they do it so it is best to do everything else then get the computer reprogrammed.

Thanks for the advice FSBIKER I will give it a go. Exhaust and Fan shouldn't be a problem. I had thoughts of doing the intake but im worried about getting water sucked into the engine. I dont do lot of forging but I dont want to be restricked.

The XTerra is not a race winner but that was apparent in the test-drive. I probably drive mine as hard and fast as is safely possible and have come to realize the acceleration etc that characterizes the XTerra is set for a reason. They arent exactly hot-rod road performers. After driving the new SC I still thought it slow compared to my previous GM V8-Vortec Z-71 but the powertrain on the XTerra appeals to my sense of "everything you need - nothing you dont." Nothing like going 0-20 in traffic faster eh?
You might get a little more kick with an exhaust upgrade, new performance spark plugs and wires and a few more mods but the expense will far outweigh the quest for speed & power. As far as it being "gutless" - I am not sure about that. I think it is all in the way you approach the vehicle. I spend a lot of time in high altitude areas goofing around and I find that the X does very well if you work it. I do agree that its no V8 Wrangler off road though. PNWX has had some fun, fast-paced runs through the rockies with little or no trouble as far as "pep" is concerned. My main piss is with the low range gearing - its not unlivable though. I have to admit - after a test drive recently I am going to look at picking up a Subaru WRX as another car for a bit of adrenaline. |
