AC bypass pulley, do these work for bad compressor?
I bought my 1997 LSS in 2004, had a bad bearing in the AC compressor, replaced unit and assembly with an aftermarket one. After only 36,000 miles the new one has leaked out and is occasionally grinding the bearings again.
Had a local shop refill the system yesterday, nice to have AC on these hot days, quiet so far, but they told me that there are leaks and the AC bearing is grinding up. I don't want to spend money on this car as it has lots of problems, but noticed a product called an AC bypass pulley by Dorman advertised. Asked the mechanic who worked on my car and he said it will work fine on some vehicles, but not front wheel drive as the pulley won't line up to the belt. Dorman says it comes with a washer to adjust for this. Is it just his opinion or do these devices work? Anyone use one successfully? I can live without AC if I have to. This would help me to keep the car for several more years at only $40.00 to buy the part. I finally joined this forum, I have owned 5 Delta 88 cars over the years, from 1968 to 1997 vintage, too bad the company went belly up. Thanks. |
