320 td e46 non start

a friends car wouldn't start intermittantly, hot or cold. His wife said that when she switched the ignition on if she heard the pump prime then she knew it would start and if the pump could not be heard then it wouldn't start no matter how long she cranked the engine over.
They took their car to an independant bmw specialist who said he knew what the problem was, swarfe in the fuel tank and changed the fuel pump at about the cost of £500.00.
Surprise, the problem was still there. The owner was told that there was also a fault code found to do with the glowplugs and he took it upon himself to take them out and check them, three were found to be faulty, he replaced all four and initially the car seemed to start better, 20 minutes later when they went to move the car it wouldn't start again. they said to me that when the ignition was first switched on they could hear the pump prime and then switch off, but now they seemed to say that they could hear the pump running all the time the ignition was left on.
They have had the codes tested again and on cylinders 2,3 and 4 activation is mentioned codes 4423,4433 and 4443.
On a fully charged battery the engine tries to fire initially but then just turns over.
They have had the fuel pressure checked and it starts off at 512 bar then drops to 43 bar.
Has anyone heard of this type of fault or got any ideas?

we have had a lot of problems with leaking injectors. If it is a common rail system when it starts and runs pull the pipe of the front end of the injectors and let the diesel run into a measuring jug it must not be more than 100 mls in 5 mins.
