1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

1996 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1 engine

The driver side cooling fan is coming on above 3/4 on the dash temp gauge. I have shut it down before it gets to the top line before the red without the passenger fan coming on. I am assuming that the temp gauge shouldn't go past 1/2 way during normal conditions and if it does, the fan should come on before that.

Which one is the primary cooling fan and at what point on the temp gauge is it supposed to come on?

Thanks,
Adam

Re: 1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

Thank you for your reply but that doesn't make sense. Did you mean both fans will turn on with A/C?

At what temp does the fan turn on without the A/C and which one?

Thank you,
Adam

I think you need to be concerned why its going up to the red zone instead of when the fans come on. Stuck thermostadt?

Re: 1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

Thank you for your suggestion. I believe the reason why the car is getting hot is because the fan is the problem.

This is a new car for me so I am not familiar with its operation but there is no way that your car runs without overheating without the cooling fan coming on to stabalize the temp.

Can someone please tell me what is normal for the temp gauge to be at during normal operating temp., what it looks like when the cooling fan kicks on and which fan comes on first?

Thank you,
Adam

Re: 1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

Had the same issue on a 95. Thought it was a bad fan. Pulled one from a junkyard, noticed it was rewired back to the other side. Checked mine, it was good, so rewired it. But mine has never got up into the red zone even without the fans coming on. You are overheating for some other reason.

Angry Re: 1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

Thank you for the reply. The Fan is good, it isn't coming on.

The car didn't get to the red. I shut it off before then. If I let the car idle for 15 minutes it will slowly get hotter and hotter. The fan on the driver side comes on but the passenger side doesn't.

I jumped out the passenger side relay and the fan comes on. Its not getting a signal to turn on.

All I need is for someone to tell where the needle is on the Temp. gauge when the Engine Temp Sensor tells the computer to turn on the primary cooling fan and which fan that is.

Why cant anyone answer that simple question?

Thank you,
Adam

Re: 1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

Most cooling fans come on when stuck in traffic, idling, hot temps outside. Not driving down the road. If you are overheating, like I said, thermostadt. Any oil/water mix? in overflow tank?

OMG! THIS IS INSANE!

Did you read what I wrote???

"If I let the car idle for 15 minutes it will slowly get hotter and hotter."

PLEASE, if you have this car, let your already warmed up car idle for 15 minutes and watch it. Tell me what the temp guage is at at the end of 15 min and which Fan comes on. PLEASE!

Thank you,
Adam

Yes I read it. But you have more issues than just a cooling fan. Its 32 degrees out. My fans don't come on.

Talking Re: 1996 Old Cutlass Supreme Cooling Fan question

Thank you for the reply. I am in Las Vegas, it's a little warmer here.

Lets say I do have a problem that's causing the temp. to be higher then it should. O.K. I get that, lets get off of that. Regardless, there is a point when the cooling fan should come on. I am trying to find out what the gauge looks like when that happens and which fan comes on first.

Can you PLEASE do me one more favor?

I understand that it may be colder where you are but your car will still get to a point where it is running at operating temperature.

After its good and warmed up, let it idle for 15 min. and tell me where your needle is pointing on your temp. gauge? Not what temp. because my Gauge doesn't have numbers but where it's at. A picture would be the BEST.

I would really appreciate it.
Adam

Its just before the red marker, the needle straight up is about 205, there is a post about this over at Chevy Talk in the 95 or 94 section, I didnt trust the guage and installed a aftermarket guage. A good hand scanner can tell you what temp actually is!
