Unibody?

Hey guys,
I was looking for safety my 89 Honda Civic Si,
but It failed because of two rust spots on the unibody. The guy at the shop toild me I couldj ust weld a couple pieces onto the unibody to replace it. I was wondering, is he right? Cause a bodyshop told me that he has to make brackets and stuff. And if he is right, is there any dangers that could come from welding the underside of a car? Any chemicals that might catch fire? Do you have to seal it with something? What precautions should I take? Do I disconnect that battery, for unibody work? Thanks

-Mitch

P.S. This car is my project car, so I'm doing it all myself.
