Yeah, the one I use is a snap-on commerical grade that cost a little over 3500.00. It can read just about anything foreign or domestic. I would recomend like in the other posts getting a manual so that you can see where the sprockets should be to check the timing. The only other things I can think of is the air temp sensor or the knock sensor. They can retard or advance the timing. But I doubt if they were malfunctioning they would make the run that badly. I have seen a mass airflow sensor go out before and had similar symptoms.

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body? You know when that happened to me, it was right before the intake gaskets went kaput. I ran really crazy - high to low idle witrh rought running - as if you took 2 wires off of a six cylinder and tried to drive.

Re: Re: 99 mailubu chain or belt timing????
Without having the engine scanned, it could be almost anything. I had a similiar problem but my Malibu was making a knocking sound along with a very rough idle. The dealer looked at it and found a broken valve spring. Although it had 38,000 miles, they fixed it for free under a "customer satisfaction" policy. My Malibu also had a P0300 engine code.
