Angry Steering Noise at start up

Hi all, need some advice.

My 2003 X5 4.4i recently developed a very loud pwr steering pump grinding noise at start up. It goes away after the car is warmed up, but sounds horrible when the car is first started.

The steering seems to work fine though.

I've checked my manual, and can't find any mentioning of the location of the power steering pump and reservoir. Can anyone tell me where it is so I can at least check if I have enough power steering fluid?

Thanx!
