Brakes

My brake light has just come on. (the circle with the 6 dots around it) I'm being told the rotors and sensors need to be replaced everytime the brake pads get replaced. Is this true for X5 3.0 2001.

Re: Brakes

have the rotor checked for thickness, you can get away with replacing the sensor i have done it, but its not too much money to just replace it, the worst case would be the light would stay on if the sensor was bad, its not a safety issue if thats the case replace it but after ou do the brake job you have to reset the light

Turn the key to position 2 but don't start the car then just wait for 30 seconds or so until the yellow warning light goes out.

This is assuming that your service center really installed a new sensor and they plugged it in to the harness properly.

Minimum Pad Thickness is 3mm and Minimum Rotor Thickness is 10.5mm

good luck

Re: Brakes

Also if you personally want to check the thickness of the pads and see if the sensors are touching or not the sensors are located on the front left and right rear.
(Drive side front and passanger rear)

Yes that's true. All of the dealers will tell you to replace the rotors and sensors when brake pads are changed. If your still under warranty the 1st change is free. After that be prepared to fork out close to $1800.

Re: Brakes

Bmw Rotors Are Designed To Wear With The Pads. They Both Have A Very Soft Material To Maximize Braking Performance. If You Want Bmw Performance Stay Away From Aftermarket Rotors And Pads. The minimum rotor thickness is stamped on the front of the rotor

What is the Rotor life on X5?

I have 2002 X5 3.0. They replaced the rotor and pad when I ask them to do the safty inspection. My car has only 40000 KM (not miles). What is the rough life for the rotors

Re: Brakes

There is no length of time that rotors last since everyone drives their car differnt. SOme people stop at the last second and some let off the gas when they see a red light instead of stop as the alst second. But we usually replace brakes at around 20-35K miles
