'01 Cougar - Spits gas out of tank when filling!
Hi,
In the past 4-6 weeks, if you let the car get down around ¼ of a tank, and you stop to fill-up, I have this problem. You get between a gallon and a gallon and half in and the nozzle shuts off, and all this gas comes back up out of the tank. If you have a gas pump that has a splash guard on it, you're ok, but if not, you get a gas bath. It will do this until it gets up around ¾ of a tank, then you can fill it normally. There appears to be a lot of air gushing back out with the gas. I've trying holding the gas nozzle in the tank for a few seconds before starting to pump, but nothing seems to work. It takes about 8-10 shut offs and the gas coming back up the fill line before you get to where you can fill it up finally. This is not only annoying, but dangerous, and at what gas costs, who needs to waste any gas. Any ideas why this is doing this? I usually fill my car up before it gets to a ½ a tank anyway, but my wife doesn't, and she usually burns up the gas, and leaves me to fill it, and with this problem. Thanks, Loral |
