HANS device & helmet 1:24 scale
I just finished my first attempts on making my own HANS / Helmet-combination in 1:24 scale.
Accompanying to my Porsche GT3R project, just to have something to lay on the car’s roof once when the car is finished (together with my gloves). The basic HANS device is made out of cutted brass sheet, after several attempts I got it. It looks a bit like a tuning fork (Y-shaped). It took me hours and hours to sand, rework, cut, sand again…… Then the shoulder pads are sculpted with magic sculp and some pieces of plastic sheet were added to enforce the backside of the “head rest” and the surfaces of the brackets. I don’t know if its 100% in scale. I hope so. It has to work with the helmet (a GF-models-product), hollowed out (a ghoulish duty by the way……………) and abraded completely to make my own detailings. The hardest thing was to make the maskings for the helmet……..uff. The design is pure fantasy. The coloring of the helmet is in contrast to the car’s livery later on. The project isn’t finished yet. The helmet has to be fixed to the structure. The small belts between the helmet and the HANS device are still missing so as the bolts and some other small details. Will be a pleasure to complete it over the next couple of days. Please let me know what you think! All comments are very welcome. ...and don't think your eyes are playing tricks on you. The helmet is a bit aslope on the column. All the best, next update with the completed thing. Yours jochen |

Re: HANS device & helmet 1:24 scale
CAVEAT: I work for HANS Performance Products, makers of the HANS Device.
Great work Jochen! I also scratch built a device but in 1/12 scale to go with a Tamiya F1 Williams model. I made mine in plastic then covered it with carbon foil. Here's a photo. Thank you. |

Re: HANS device & helmet 1:24 scale DONE
First of all, thanks a lot for your kind words! I appreciate that!
Professor HANS, thanks!! That confirmed me. Let me close that chapter………it took me quite some nerves due to the tininess of that whole thing. I have another problem by now, guess which one!? . . . . Yes, right, I don’t know how to handle that thing. It’s made out of round about 30 parts now and fragile like nothing I’ve done before. I think I put in a safe now…;-) Call the result sketchy, i apologize but i complied with a lots of pics. BUT in the end the look as a miniature is what counts. At least from my point of view….to quote Francois Verlinden, the Belgian godfather of military modelling, it’s “GUESS WORK” (but somehow also real). As I said before, I’m not quite sure about the size. I think the helmet could be more bulky BUT it is how it is (oohhoo, the red wine is taking effect again!!!). I’ve chosen NOT to fix the cables / connectors to the helmet (as often done in real race situations by Velcro-strips) due to the somehow “small appearance” of the helmet. The loose cables help to enlarge the item. Know what I mean? Don’t know how to explain it better. STOP talking now, holy……. Here are the latest and last pics about this one. Good fight, good night!!! All the best Jochen ( downed by Palo Alto, Reserva from Chile.......) |

Re: HANS device & helmet 1:24 scale
Dear Jochen,
awesome work. Congratulation to this tiny and well done model in a model ;-) Just two words. Min. one cable you could fix on the top of the helmet. I´ve seen it on an older helmet of Frank Biela. The cable was fixed by Velcro tape. After entering the seat and fixing the seat belt, they took then the end of the cable from the top of the helmet to put it in the socket. And now I´m waiting for progress of the Porsche. :-) Tschöö Dirk |

Re: HANS device & helmet 1:24 scale
Fantastic! Beautiful job. The wine did its work well.
The radio wire, drink tube, HANS tethers etc. really make this a special model. GM |

Re: HANS device & helmet 1:24 scale
Definitely a one of a kind - at least until somebody else is crazy enough to try this.

Wow, very nice little model. Hans device and helmet look great and will definitely add to anything they are displayed with. Well done.
