Re: favorite 4 banger

slightly off topic but i never found the 1.8T to be that impressive with my preference being with the V5 that saw too little use. In the Golfs, I've always reckoned the V5 to be the nicer to drive; the engine seemed to feel more eager to pull and was much smoother. Sounds better too.

Re: favorite 4 banger

no the 1.8T is 5v as in five valves per cylinder. i think he was referring to the V5 as in a V6 less one cylinder. it is a good engine, very smooth and good power delivery, 170bhp.

in our golf it sounds like a diesel at idle, i think that's because shortly after we bought it it spewed out all its oil on the motorway and may have some internal damage, nothing too serious.

Re: favorite 4 banger

Well V5 is not possible. You can't place 5 cylinders in the V style, they are inline 5. Above poster has a point, but it doesn't make any difference since car is still a 5 cyl car.

Re: favorite 4 banger

i think it's set up as a V4 then one end of the crank has only one connecting rod connected to it instead of 2

Re: favorite 4 banger

probably the volkswagon engineers tryin to get some attention or maybe the extra space was used for something useful like extra engine cooling.

Re: favorite 4 banger

I like the elise i just dont agree in there choice of engine, then again thats just the right amount of power for how light the car is.

V5 is possible for the balance problem just use a counterbalance weight on the section of the crank shaft where there is only one rod. Its a poor design as far as reliability goes. Strangest engine ive ever seen was a horizontally opposed in a bobcat type machine, had dual cranks and the pistons used the same cylinder for combustion. Strange as hell sounded awsome.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.
