Key fob

One of my key fobs is not working properly. It will lock the doors and sound the horn but not unlock. My question is do I have to get a new fob and does a dealer normally have them available?

Re: Key fob

Hi,
do you have another fob that works correctly? Just to make sure you know where the problem is.
This goes thru the remote lock receiver to the BCM (Body Control Module).
The fobs are about $50-60 at the dealer, a lot cheaper on ebay.
You will have to get the system programmed to accept the new fob. The procedure has been posted, I can re-post if you need it.
Take care, Eggert

Yes, I have the second fob which works fine. So I understand correctly, when they reprogram the BCM to accept the new fob, does it affect my other good one?

Re: Key fob

Hi,
use the Transmitter Programming Procedure to program ALL fobs at the same time.

Transmitter Synchronization
• Resynchronization may be necessary due to the security method used by the remote keyless entry system.
The transmitter does not send the same signal twice to the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR).
• The RCDLR will not respond to a signal that has been sent previously.
This prevents anyone from recording and playing back the signal from the transmitter.
• The panic button should still operate normally when the system is out of synchronization.
• Resynchronization may be necessary under the following conditions:
- The battery in the transmitter is very weak.
- The battery in the transmitter was replaced.
- The battery in the vehicle has been in a low or no charge condition for an extended period of time.
• In order to resynchronize the transmitter with the RCDLR, perform the following steps:
1. Stand within 1.5 meters (5 ft) from the vehicle.
2. Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter for 7 seconds.
The door locks should cycle in order to confirm resynchronization.

Transmitter Programming
Important: All transmitters which are to be recognized by the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) must be programmed in a single programming sequence. If the system is placed in program mode it will erase all previously programmed transmitters upon the receipt of the programming signal from the first transmitter. Up to four transmitters can be programmed.

Do not operate on program the transmitters in the vicinity of other vehicles that are in the keyless entry program mode. This prevents the programming of the transmitters to the incorrect vehicle.
You may program up to 4 transmitters using the following procedure:

Transmitter Programming Procedure
1. Close all the vehicle doors.
2. Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.
3. Press and hold the door unlock switch.
4. While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF.
5. Release the door unlock switch. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the program mode.
6. Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one transmitter. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.
7. Repeat the previous step to program up to four transmitters.
8. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter mode.
9. Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation.
Take care, Eggert

Try cleaning the FOB, disassemble the unit like you were going to change the battery, by the way change the battery. Take the rubber cover that contains the buttons off of the printed circuit board. On the back of each button is a small black patch, this contains carbon and makes a connection to the PCBoard which has a set of interleaved fingers printed on it.
Clean the contacts and carbon buttons with an electronic contact cleaner and a QTip to make sure that you don't have any moisture, dirt, grease. pocket fuzz etc. on the contacts. These are low voltage, very low current devices so they need to be clean, pockets and purses are really not a good place for them to live.
Good luck, then there's always EBAY.

Re: Key fob

I agree on taking it apart and cleaning the contacts and changing the battery.

It's definatly worth a try before going and buying a new one!!

Thanks, taking it apart and cleaning it did the trick. There was a fair amount of dirt inside.
