A.C. trouble '95 Eldo several opinions ????

I'm getting "bounced" all over on this one--A.C. compressor (new GM) won't power up. My non-dealer mechanic installed it, along with accumulator, rec/dryer, exp tube etc etc. Thought it might be relay, but no. Local expert says PCM (hasn't seen car). Mechanic has given up. I had an appointment at ($$)dealership-now cancelled 'til Tuesday morning. IN FORUMS I've been told so far .... low pressure or high pressure cut out switch may need replacing. AND/OR disconnect battery for 30 seconds because the flag will still say do not power comp unless this is done (I think it's safe to ASSUME he tried this, but I can't find out for 2-3 hours). IF, that's IF- he did this already and still no power, what do you think? IF he didn't, is he a BOZO?? THANKS!!

I'm having the same problem w/my 97. Could this have anything to do with low battery power?

Don't go to a dealer for anything unless you are desperate!! My problem once ended up being a relay that intermittently functioned- like when my A/C guys were checking it out.

You say "local expert hasn't seen car." Get him to see it. You shouldn't be taking A/C problems to a general mechanic. My normal wrench is great but I go to an independent radiator and A/C shop for anything related to A/C or cooling system. They guaranty their work which is what you needed now that you say your mechanic has given up. What the hell is that? He shouldn't have tackled it if he couldn't be certain of the outcome after diagnosis.

Ask around to friends and family who they use besides dealers for A/C repair for a referral.

Gentlemen, this is the way the General has designed the HVAC systems in all there cars since the '80s. The computer locks out the compressor when freon levels get too low, and WON'T turn it back on til the 'off' code is cleared. Go into diagnostics (HVAC controls; press OFF and WARM simutaniously) until you get to CLEAR CODES, then press FAN UP to clear, and you're back in business. As long as you have sufficient Freon in the system.
Your mechanic should know this; it's nothing magic or new.
