Smoked ECM
96 Dodge RAM 350 van, 5.9, AT. I hit a hard bump, amd the engine kicked off. Wouldn't restart. Attempting to restart smoked the ECM. Inspection shows small hole through potting and circuit board just right of cap? marked with a big plus on top, under 3 large diodes mounted directly on circuit board, just left of diode? with heat sink sticking up through potting. Any idea what went under here that burned through the board, or better yet, what circuit(s) may be involved. I'll replace the ECM, but I don't want to put in another ECM just to see it smoke. So far I have gotten no continuity to any pin in the plug, from the traces I managed to hook to.
I suspect the fuel pump circuit or one of the sensors in the same circuit because of the considerable current needed to smoke a hole in the circuit board that way. Although the hole in the potting (rubber protection) was smaller than a pencil eraser. Thanks. |

Re: Smoked ECM
Pictures of it would be very helpful in understanding where exactly your referencing.
