1983 300d
I have an option to purchase a one owner 1983 300D Benz which has 283K miles. Car has always been garaged and owner says maintained well. I have inspected the car and it is in very good condition with no rust anywhere. The interior is also very good. Owner says the only thing not working in the A/C. What problems might I expect with these high miles and what is this car worth? What is the approximate cost to rebuild a Benz diesel if required? Thanks much!

Don't worry...
Don’t be concerned about high miles on a Mercedes diesel; if cared for they can go 500,000 miles with out a rebuild. Many owners replace the engine than rebuild; a rebuild can cost anywhere from 1500 to 3500 dollars; but again if the car you are considering has service records and gets a clean bill of health from your mechanic (and you continue to take car of it) you won’t have to go there. Average purchase price should be between 2500 to 3500 dollars. The non-working a/c may bring down the price; your mechanic will be able to tell you what’s needed to fix the a/c. Rust is the only problem with these cars; if you’ve got that beat than these cars will run forever. My 81 300 D has over 382,000 miles and runs great.
Hope this helps and good luck. |
