The magazines do not tinker with the cars to get them to run better. Why would they care? The manufactures sure as hell do though. If a manufacture is selling a performance car then they typically provide the magazines with what is know in the industry as a 'ringer'. Basically, the motor has been given some special attention such as blue printing, some times a bit higher compression. I have read that Chevy has a test driver who can shift their manual transmission C5's quite well without using the clutch. Not great for life of the tranny but great for recording a 1/4 mile time. The motorcycle mag industry is well known for getting ringers during its 600 sport bike shoot outs. Hell, anyone remember when the 95 ZX6R recorded a 10.89 in the 1/4 mile stock! Put a little effort into 5 or 6 magazine test cars and watch it pay off in sales!

The VII has a smaller turbo than the VI.

The EVO VII is heavier, has a smaller turbo and has larger/heavier wheels.

the reason motor trend always has the fastest times is because their test track is slightly downhill...

motor trend said that they are going to bring the lancer over with the only modifications being the bumper and intercooler package so we will not lose hardly anything and it should be here around the fourth quarter. and it will be the evo VII. how thrilling!!

the evo 6 makinen edition is the only stock evo to hit 12's. its like a 12.9 or 12.8, the evo 7 is a low 13 second car, but that is the JDM/EDM version. we already know the USDM verson well be getting wont have the active differentials, what else will it lose? most likely a little power as well, the front mount intercooler is not gonna pass US crash testing. my guess is itll be a high 13 second car, just faster than the wrx (which have been known, on rare occasions, to hit 13's stock). but then what will mitsubishi do when subaru releases the real deal WRX STi here? THAT is the car the evo is supposed to compete with, NOT the base wrx. my guess is they wont do anything, and rely on marketing and image to sell their cars, just like they have with every other car recently.

Stock wrx running 13's ? Yeah sure. Over here in Australia, the older shape wrx was good for low to mid 14's. they have the same power as the new one and are around 300 lbs lighter. The new shape wrx is lucky to get a mid 14. The new STI has just been released over here and is good for a high 13. To get the best times from an Evo, you need to drop the clutch at around 6000rpm and hang on. As far as WRXs go, we have had them in Aust. since 1994 and we see them everywhere and there has been alot of development done on them. In fact we have the quickest one on the planet. 10.01 @ 140 odd mph. We also have a few 10 sec Lancer evo 2s street cars, quickest being 10.2@143mph

car and driver lists the new body 227hp wrx at a 14.1 1/4 mile. thats a magazine driver, who isnt used to the car, on an un-broken in car. with a good driver, good enough track conditions, and a broken in car, do u seriously think they cant gain .2 seconds on a couple lucky runs? no wait, u actually think they would be lucky to get mid 14s...
