I know this is an old thread, but I only hope someone can help! I have a 2000 JGC Ltd with the Infinity Gold system and my right front tweeter has started crackling. It's not bad when the volume is low, but it is very noticeable when the volume is mid to high. It almost sounds like a vibration. I saw somewhere online that this may be the amplifier and not the actual tweeter. How do I tell? I have an extended warranty that covers all this, but there is a $100 deductible. I can get a new factory tweeter for about $40. I also don't have a lot of confidence in the dealer to troubleshoot this problem. They are mechanics, not audio specialists. I do admit that I listen rather loudly at times, but shouldn't these speakers be able to handle the volume? I don't really want to replace the whole system because I think the factory installed one really sounds great. I appreciate any help!

I have never heard of the Amp causing this problem. If your tweeter is crackling I would say it is the tweeter that needs to be replaced. I put 1" dome tweeters in place of the factory speakers ($15) and have been happy. I would replace both of your speakers with a high quality aftermarket tweeter. (the factory infinity tweeters are notorius for blowing, and if you replace them with factory speakers they will blow again)

Ok, I have the exact same problem! Soon after I purchased my 2000 laredo w/infinity gold I had my left tweeter crackle and blow. Paid the dealer to replace and now the right one is doing the same thing. I also now have a blown speaker in the rear left door. I am sick of this speaker system and do not want to pay the dealer again. Any recommendations on replacements for these 2? I don't want to have to replace all the speakers since I also have both of my heated leather seats not working and a bad fan clutch. I had a 95 cherokee country for 6 years and never had to replace anything but brakes so I;m surprised at how many things are wrong with my new one.

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
would a 3.5" tweeter fit in the dash originally made for 2.5" tweeter? Has anyone tried this? This is for '99 Grand Chorkee.

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
as for removal, there is a panel all the way in the front of the dash, all you have to due is pull a fair bit and it will come up. I just replaced my speakera and went to a fairly high end audio store. the guy had 4-5 different speaker ranging from $69-120 a pair, but said with the infinity system the $69 dollar speakers where the best ($110 installed). They are 3-inch 2-way speakers made by Eclipse (model SE8235) and I have been very pleased to date - 60W Peak, 20W RMS. Hope this helps

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
Older Infinity Gold tweeters had a base blocking capactor wired in series with the speaker. Around '98 or '99 they dropped this capacitor and the trouble began. Infinity has since released a new model (AC) that supposedly doesn't blow. I have no idea if the newer model includes a capacitor or they fixed it another way.
In my opinion another major reason why the factory tweeters blow is that Infinity picked a crossover point in the amp that is too low for that tweeter. Base on tweeters = blown tweeters. Had a 2000 WJ with the Infinity system and blew one of the tweeters. Replaced them with a pair of Blaupunkt 1 inch tweeters mounted in the dash grill holes. These came with a mounting system that fit really well in this hole. I wired in the crossover that came with these tweeters to block the lower range signals from the amp, under 2500 Hz. The downside to this setup was that a little of the midrange was lost since the door speaker signal is mostly base. In spite of this I got a lot of complements from people that couldn't believe this was an almost bone stock system. There is a vendor on eBay offering new in the Mopar box, later model (AC) Infinity Gold tweeters for $98 a pair + shipping. Search www.ebaymotors.com for "Infinity Jeep tweeters" and you should find speakers from this vendor, twopondloop. Another company offers tweeter replacements for $40 + shipping. www.12positive.com. Can't vouch their quality. Just passing along the info. Recently purchased a 99 WJ Limited also with Infinity Gold and BOTH tweeters are blown. I'll probably go with the guy on eBay. Cheaper than the Blaupunkts were 2 years ago and less trouble to install. |

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
Had the same problem in my jeep. Hunted all over for a 2.5 tweeter, but never did find one. Bought replacements through a jeep dealer for $40 a pop. Took me about 10 minutes to install and now I just listen to my music a little softer.

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
Use the new factory tweeters, you wont regret it.
If you were to throw the infinity on an audio analyzer right next to the typical high end after market system you will find that watt for watt the Infinity reproduces sounds with truer fidelity than the after market units. Some people these days seem to think that thump means good sound when all it does is hide midrange and treble area distortion. Since bass sounds are low frequency it doesn't take much of an amp or head to reproduce them, just a properly built speaker to handle the movement necessary so the speaker doesn't buzz. Of course if you look at a truly exclusive sound system such as a true audiophile would install, there are no kickers or thump boxes, Just crisp clear sound. After market thumper systems sound like garbage when playing music such as classical, new age and acoustical simply because they cant reproduce the subtle nuances of delicate sounds. Systems that can are capable of sounding good playing anything. Sadly the same cant be said of "thrasher" systems, not to mention they don't induce premature hearing loss. |

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
Ok, i am somewhat of an audiophile. I always prefer quality over quantity when it comes to sound. There are many roads you can take when some of your components start to fail. The factory system was barely acceptable for me and then my tweeters blew just like everyone elses. You can use .75" tweeters all the way up to 3.5" coaxials(you have to use a heat gun to warp the duct below the speaker to fit the 3.5") I replaced them with a set of MB Quart premium component speakers. 1" tweeters in the dash and the 6.5" with an adapter plate in the door. If you like quality components and do not mind spending a few dollars MB Quart makes some of the finest german speakers available. JL Audio, Eclipse, a/d/s all make great speakers, most of them are >$200 however. Now if you really want to make your audio sound even better, the amp and the rest of the speakers would be the next to go. Make sure you replace these factory components with better than what came out. Don't be discouraged by the poor performance of the factory infinity system. Infinity makes some good products, however the mass produced paper coned crap in the jeep infinity system are not included. Get a high quality 4ch. amp from eclipse, alpine(higher end ones), PPI, Phoenix Gold, JL audio, there are others out there as well if you do some research. If you retain the factory head unit you will need to get a high to low converter to get rid of the higher output levels (non pre-amp outputs) of the head unit. there are wiring diagrams on wjjeeps.com
now if you are ready to replace your headunit(factory cd changer must go as well if you have one as it will not interface with aftermarket HUs) Almost any eclipse, alpine(except the cheapos), clarion(except the cheapos) will do. Pioneer makes mediocre head units as far as sound quality goes. Some of their higher end units are good, mostly in the premier line. sony? crap. jensen? crap. dual? crap. that radio shack optimus? crap. Want to retain your factory steering wheel controls? pacific accessory corp. (PAC) makes adapters for eclipse, alpine, pioneer, etc. that do not use infrared. they also have an infrared model that basically acts like a hard wired remote, but you have to point the emitter at the HU. anyways, that's all i have for now |

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
The easiest and cheepest way to go is www.jeeptweeter.com The site is owned by a Jeep dealer who has access to the Chrysler / Infinity direct replacement. I think I saved like $20 (pair) over my local dealer.
The dash just pry's appart. Put a flat screwdriver in the seam in front of the speakers. the whole thing will snap out and back in - its real easy. Once you get the parts the whole job takes about 10 minutes. This is my pref over screwing around w/ aftermarkets and making them fit. I did this about a yaer ago and havn't had any problems w/ the new speakers. |

Re: Infinity Gold tweeters crackaling
The stock ones sound good until they go bad. End of story.Try www.12Positive.com for a set and they also show you how to remove the Jeep dash tweeters on the site too. If you want original ones (dont know why you would?? they are trash.) go to or www.Jeeptweeter.com for factory new ones - peace~
