Best Engine for 510
I have been looking at the Dime Quarterly website and found out that the 510s have different motors. Some include a L16, L20, VG30, SR20, and 13B. I know that the VG30 is a 6cyl. and the SR20 is a 4. But how much power can a L16, L20, and 13B make??? Which motor is the best to use??? People say 13B motors are hard to find, and the L16 and L20 are common (the L20 is most popular). And the VG30 and SR20 require some work and $$$. The L16 and L20 motors require a lot of work to produce a lot of hp. Isnt their a famous Datsun 510....something about a Trans something??? Pleez help.

l20s are good and you can prolly push out about 150hp...with some work...if you want power i'd go with a KA motor and supe that up. KA's are going for pretty cheap now adays since the 240sx camp is going the SR20 route.
join the mailing list on datsun510.com and u'll learn alot from there. myself i'm planning to turbo a l18 motor with a crown turbo kit. |

you know in all honesty i'm not too sure. i haven't gotten my turbo yet and haven't tested it yet, but i'm figuring anywhere from 25 - 50% in power increase is not too hard or reasonable depending on what kind of setup you have. I got a good deal that i couldn't pass up so i bought it and now i'm doing my research, i know its a lil backwards but hey if i decide its not for me i can always sell it.
my setup will be pretty much stock, but i am planning to install a A87 peanut head with a DAMB or ISKY cam (still trying to figure out which one i want) and 44 Mikuni's if i can figure out how to get the turbo to go from a downdraft to sidedraft mount carb so i think i can get a fair amount of power out of it. A stock L18 if i'm not mistaken is about 100hp? so with a turbo on the setup i'm planning to have i think pushing 125-135hp is with in reason and i'm not planning to do any major engine work yet. but like i said i'm still doing research. The turbo kit i'm getting is a straight bolt in sort-of and says that i don't need to do any internal engine mods. I'll prolly find out more info once i get the turbo and better power specs. i can let you know once i get the turbo what the power specs are. or you can always try joining the mailing list on datsun510.com and see what they think....its a good way to network with local dimers in the area and get great info from them. but that's just my 50cents worth...lol anyhow just for your info i'm still new to 510's so i'm learning as i go. |
