boost ideas

ok i have a turbo under my bench that was on a running car about 5 years ago so i want to put it on my neon questions are

1 how much boost will the basically stock motor take (this turbo only makes like 7 psi max i think but i want to keep it conservative stay in the 4to 5 range)

2 what can i do about the ecm , will the mopar ecm work for this if not what will that wont kill my wallet or be complicated

3 what kind of gain should i expect from 4 to 5 psi (will it be worth all the work) ---i have a 2001 rt head with some port on the stock bottomend (140XXX miles) work an atx tb and no egr valve

4 not a question im doing a home made turbo type deal to save money on parts i have a few ideas already going into play on how to hook it all up just need some info on tunning and the motors durablity

Re: boost ideas

On a healthy stock engine, the block and pistons can handle about 8 psi. You will need what is called a "missing link" to keep the PCM from seeing boost. If it sees it, it will freak out. I don't know anyone running 4-5 psi, but around 7-8 psi you could see about 225-250 HP total.

Re: boost ideas

so this all may be easier than i think
so is 7-8 psi safe for daily use
and the "missing link" you mention is this a theoretical thing or what i know other injected cars need different map sensors but not a clue on this car this is the only part that stumps me i tried Google with little luck i did see something about running boost on the stock dohc n/a ecu on a sohc motor but i don't know how reliable it is and cant find it again didn't say any thing about the map tho

Re: boost ideas

You can either use a missing link or a MAP clamp. Either one will keep the PCM from seeing the boost.

And yes, you can realiably run 7-8 psi on a daily driver.

Re: boost ideas

ok i been googleing and found lot of info the map clamp ive actually made one before ill have to find it also i found a way to test the wastegate to see how much boost it will make i got about 6 psi so its close any insite on the dohc n/a ecu running on a sohc motor also will the factory ecm keep up

so in the end of running back and fourth checking numbers and such i think ill be able to do this pretty cheap im thinking with out the mopar ecu 150 to 200 bucks (depending on what parts i can scavenge form my dads place) 200+ hp here i come
