III 3.8 liter

My laCrosse III 3.8 liter used 3 quarts of oil in the first 5000 miles. Deler tells me this is normal . Is it?

Re: III 3.8 liter

Take it to another dealer and have them check it out. The limit use to be 2 quarts for 2000 miles not sure of what it is now.

Re: III 3.8 liter

Do you think it's normal? I sure don't. I read somewhere that the cadillac Northstar burned oil. The fix was to drive it hard, make the car rev to the limit when driving occasionally. This was because the Northstar was adapted from the Aurora Racing V8, and still wanted to be driven race car style. I drive like this anyway

Not sure of the validity of the above, anyone who knows more about it, feel free to correct me.

Re: III 3.8 liter

For emissions the engines are designed to burn some oil. Believe it or not burning oil helps to clean up the emissions some.

Newer engines that are low miles haven't had the chance to wear in correctly. I would believe that your oil consumption should lower soon.

But I would still call GM customer assisstance and find another Buick dealer to take a look at it. You could have another problem adding to your oil consumption. Most dealers will start an oil consumption test on your engine. All that is you take your car to the dealer and they monitor your oil level.

Years ago I ran into several cars using what I thought was excessive oil consumption so I called and talked to the GM engineers and some other people. The end result was 2 quarts per 2 thousand miles is normal.

It's a good idea for car owners to check there fluid levels once a month.
