96 GC Selectrac "Klunk when going into drive and reverse, sign of problem?
I have a not loud, not mild thunk noise when going into drive and reverse is this normal or a sign of trouble comming?, and what kind of trouble might it be? Big or small? I know you can not say for sure here but any help is apprectiated.

My 99' GC does the same thing, even after a tranny fluid and filter change. Dealer said it's a "trademark" of that tranny. 101,000 miles and still going.

Re: 96 GC Selectrac "Klunk when going into drive and reverse, sign of problem?
I'm at about 127,000 on my 96 with the 4.0L but it is probably a little more because i haven't had the rack and pinion reset after i put on my lift kit and bigger tires. it's been in my family since about 50,000 and has done it ever since i can remember.... i wouldn't worry about it too much

mine does it , whe I put it in reverse (94 grand cherokee 5.2L) but doesn't in drive. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Worn gear ring?
Someone had posted earlier that he took it to the dealer and said it was suspected the ring gear on the reverse was worn out and thus, the bit of freeplay in the gear made the klunk noise.
I never saw the reply back if he ever got the repairs done and how much and did it cure the problem? |
