350z Mods
Does anyone know what the capablities will be for the 350Z? Turbos, Superchargers and Superchips ...etc? (this will be the deciding factor if I buy it in August)

I think that there is giong yo be alot of people out there who buy a 350Z whoare going to be looking to get Turbo. My opinion but I wouldn't doubt it for on second.

You might want to look and see what they're doing to the Maxima now. The VQ engine series will probably support cross overs here -- small tweaks for certain, but I bet the same stuff will be available.

Considering the engine is extremely similiar to the Maxima, Altima and Pathfinder, and Nismo is coming to the US soon, I think you can expect so pretty decent aftermarket support. And Nissan has mentioned that they may release a turbo version in a year or two. But considering that you call an ECU a "superchip" I doubt you will be buying a turbo or supercharger anyway.

stillen up in coasta mesa has had a supercharger out for some time now for the maxima it puts out about 400 hp when tuned right. I ran into a couple of them last year at Sea World. As we all know the same motor is in the 350z.

The Compression in the 350Z's motor is probably a bit too high to get any turbo kits out right away... I'd love to see it, but I just don't see it as very likely. I'd expect a SC for sure though.

Actually the compression ratio of the VQ35 in the 350Z is less than that of the VG30 in the non-Turbo 300ZX, so I think a nice turbo running 8psi is all good.

this car is nice but will be expensive to mod well. For starters, lots of weight reduction is needed, but i guess if you're good at that you could do it yourself, but 3000 lbs is too much to get going. Second, the redline is low, so you'd need a lower stroke. then you'd need to lower the compression which may be helped by the decreased stroke and add a good turbo and all its fixins (intercooler, wastegate, boost controller etc).
it can be a strong contender if alot of work is put in thats for sure, but it might get expensive.

Try going 11.70's in a 3,700lb Grand National....or just hop in mine. 29LBS boost, baby. No car is too heavy for a turbo...thats what spooling is for. |

****Edited**** I'm just finding out now that the caption actually reads: "space is a factor in the FM platform engine bay, and the turbo Stagea suffers from turbo lag because of the long turbo plumbing. If the new Z were to have twin turbos, it would likely suffer the same problem." I'm sorry to anybody (like me) who saw this and got excited. Last edited by Malthus; 09-15-2002 at 09:25 AM. |
