Rough start, ignition noise
Recently I have had a rough idle and some surging on start-up on my 2001 Rodeo Sport V-6. I notice this mostly on colder mornings, after sitting overnight and almost never any other time. Also have noticed some ignition noise in the radio, but only when under a bridge or overpass, and can't say if this is new or just something I recently noticed. No CEL or codes. Fuel filter was replaced when the sender and pump were replaced a year ago. Engine has about 85K on it. Plugs have maybe 50K on them and never been a problem--OE Iridiums.
Any ideas? Last edited by Rmasters3; 03-22-2011 at 03:25 AM. |

Re: Rough start, ignition noise
Remove and clean your throttle body. It would also help to know year/model/engine as well but from a few clues I assume late 90's early 2000's Trooper or Rodeo. I'm guessing 2000+.

Re: Rough start, ignition noise
I cleaned the throttle body. Still had the issue this morning, although it was more of a too high idle than rough. On start it raced to 2,000 RPM plus, and settled down a little. Idled higher when in gear than in Neutral.

Re: Rough start, ignition noise
I have not tinkered with the TPS on this, and am not sure how to go about that. Where is it and how?

Re: Rough start, ignition noise
My initial thought is to rule out any problems with the Idle Air Control valve (IAC) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. Sometimes these can get bits of carbon stuck in them that can affect idle by letting more unmetered air into the intake stream. A little more air coming in here can affect idle & still not trip an OBDII code. Both of these items are easy to get to on the Isuzu 3.2 V6 & easy to clean (except the EGR pipe that runs inside the manifold plenum). There are probably a number of posts on this site that give details on how to clean them. Let us know when you find the problem.

Re: Rough start, ignition noise
This sounds like a classic intake manifold gasket issue. See the FAQs for more details.
