1991 Mercedes 350sdl turbo engine stuck?
Hi, I just got a 1991 Mercedes 350 sdl with 226,000 miles. The previous owner had a new starter alternator and batter put in and it will not turn. Also new belt. I am not sure if it is seized. Should I be able to turn this engine over with a breaker bar just like a gas engine?
If so I will check it tomorrow. |

I tried doing it yesterday but it was bigger than 15/16 and that was the biggest I had. Does anyone know what size the bolt is or if I should be able to turn it with a breaker bar? |

The car only starts in neutral
Hi, the socket size was one inch.
The engine is not stuck now. I put it in neutral and it starts but makes noise from the bell housing. I have been told that this is the torque converter. I am going to try and find one for a reasonable price. How difficult is it to pull the trans back to get the converter on this model. This is my first Mercedes and I have never worked on one either. |

cWhoa there. It may not be the converter.... the flexplate may be loose or gracked, you may havea foreign object in the bellhousing, the transmission fluid pump may be broken....
It's difficult to diagnose trouble and noises on the internet. So, take a look at the components or get a professional diagnosis before you buy a converter. If you are very lucky, all you may have to do is tighten the flexplate bolts. |

Re: 1991 Mercedes 350sdl turbo engine stuck?
Yea it could be anything but it sounds really bad. I had a jeep with loose flex plate bolts which sounded like a valve tap. This sounds like a rod is going to come out the side of the block. It is a scary noise. Someone just changed the starter. Maybe they lost a starter bolt in there.

Re: 1991 Mercedes 350sdl turbo engine stuck?
I am trying to loosen the converter bolts and I was only able to find two yesterday. Must be more. I am not able to turn the engine by hand so it is difficult. How many bolts are there?
