Re: where is the knock sensor
well i finally found something.
says its behind the engine beside the oil filter. it says its a plug not just a sensor that presses on. now looking back there i see two sensors. right directly beside the oil filter which seems to be maybe an oil pressure sensor or something just based off what it looks like. and something up a hair further which appears to be a plug. would this be the creature i am looking for ? |

Re: where is the knock sensor
Knock sensor is right behind the starter. It is the higher of the 2 sensors in the area and is almost directly above the dip stick. Be extra careful when changeing it because some of these go directly into the engine water jacket and you will loose antifreeze and/or burn yourself if it is hot.

Re: where is the knock sensor
thanks for the info.
according to the haynes manual for this particular year of escort the knock sensor is beside the oil filter, not the starter. http://www.scribd.com/doc/413491/For...l-Haynes-Ebook look at page 113 and it shows the knock sensor, now this IS for a 1.4l CFI engine, and i never noticed that until just now. I also have no intension of removing the knock sensor, only unplugging it. this is for the knock sensor mod posted in the sticky in this forum, to allow the engine to NOT remove power pre 6000rpm. can you please verify for me, that your 100% sure the knock sensor is down by the tranny ? since the starter is on the front of the motor where the tranny hooks to the engine block. can you also tell me what it looks like, or what color the wires are that come out of the sensor ? thanks man i really appreciate the help! p.s. if you are able to, you can email me a picture of it on your engine if you really feel like going that extra mile... :P lestat@mchsi.com |

Re: where is the knock sensor
just went out to the garage and checked there is nothing by the starter or dip stick that is a sensor. only thing near the dip stick. and when you said dipstick i assumed you meant tranny dip stick, since there isnt anything even near the oil dipstick, last i looked.
anyways, only thing near the tranny dipstick is a sensor coupler, that continues wire from the exhaust sensor and up to the main wiring harness. its simply a cable extension plug that is attached the tranny housing with a plastic mount. it is not a sensor connected to the engine block. where as,,, behind the motor slightly off to the side and up is a sensor plugged directly into the block with two wires coming out. i cant tell what color the wires are and can not reach it from on top the motor, i would have to jack it up tommorrow and crawl under neath. help me out here please.... p.s. http://www.car-stuff.com/mmparts/for...ck_sensor.html here is what the sensor looks like (brand new i mean) and again nothing near the front of the engine looks like that. the one i am talking about behind the motor looks more like that than anything else. |

Re: where is the knock sensor
What I was looking at specified the 2.0 engine. I am confused now also. However the wiring diagram in front of me says wiring colors are gray/red and yellow/red. Does this help?

Re: where is the knock sensor
Check the wiring for color on the back side where you thought it was. Can't trust everything we see or read I guess.

Re: where is the knock sensor
i cant really see it cus its under the manifold. it looks ... green ? or blue ?
there are only 2 wires. i MIGHT be able to take a picture in the morning but its in a rough spot. there are guys here who have done this mod, which is just unplugging the sensor and i have had this posted for a while i wish someone who has done this mod would just answer. |

Re: where is the knock sensor
yeah i can't get in there to take pictures, its in too tight of a spot for a camera.
maybe even my hand. i'd love to know where the wires travel back to so i can simply disconnect the wire there and see how the mod works. |

Re: where is the knock sensor
ok well there are two green sets under the intake manifold. (these are the wires i have been talking about all this time)
there is a multi wire (2 wires i think) with a GREEN PLUG and a single fatter GREEN WIRE with a 90deg angle plug. both of them look like a sensor. the double wire green plug is higher up under the manifold. the 90deg angle single GREEN WIRE is downa little further but over closer to the oil filter. someon elaborate a little more please... "green under the manifold" doesnt really help. (much) well looking at an aftermarket sensor online via the link i listed above it looks like the multi wire GREEN PLUG and not the fatter single green wire. can someone verify for me please... i just dont want to go unplugging a bunch of stuff i shouldnt be ya know? |

Re: where is the knock sensor
Lestat - How did that end-up working for you? Notice any improvement?
Or were you better off with the knock sensor hooked-up the way it was meant to be? My '99 runs a little rough at idle, so I'd be interested in knowing if it's worth the hassle of disconnecting that little sucker! Tip: I do find that the car runs a lot more smoothly and gets better mileage when I use super-unleaded fuel. (Hell, one has to take a bank loan to gas up these days, why not buy the good stuff!)
