went to mininova.org and downloaded it for free

Do a search for either GIMP or Paint.net, they are both free programs that can do what you need.
Not quite as powerful as photoshop, but you can have some fun with it.

the point is not who does and doesnt pay for which programs.

besides, adobe has cheaper versions sub$300 and corel paintshop is under $100

the overall point would be that

discussion of illegal pirating activities on a public message board = no no
