Question 94 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 Wont Start

94 Cutlass Supreme,116k cranks fine but wont run. Starts to run but then just quits. Can smell rich/raw unburnt fuel smell. Replaced fuel pump/strainer filter, inline fuel filter and relay. 45 lbs fuel pressure.

All vacuum lines checked and are good.

Strong/good spark.

The old crank sensor wires had been hot and exposed wires to ground so replaced crank sensor.

All fuses and relays verified good.

Scanner will not scan for codes. As soon as you start the capture mode it error's and will not retrieve codes.

I'm at a bit of a loss. Any ideas?

Will it start spraying carb cleaner into the intake if not the spark is too weak, suspect the icm, common on these cars, this assumes the mechanical condition of the engine is ok.

No, it will not start with starting fluid. It tries to run but just wont do it. Any test procedures I can do on the icm? You think that's why it wont take a scan? Mechanically it is fine.

Engine computer is 125.00 plus tax. Time to replace it?

Most parts stores can do a basic test on the icm, Try tapping the pcm firmly on the outer case with a screw driver handle, see what happens, they can also cause this condition.

Shoot, your talking Ignition Control module not PCM. You think the ICM would cause the scanner not to be able to scan the codes?

Tried tapping on the ECM and didn't help. I took the ICM off and will take it to the parts store to see if they can test it.

Those tests are not always conclusive. It is really a toss up without more sophisticated test procedures. I would go with the icm, more common than the pcm. But what do you mean you can't get codes when scanned?

The scanner wont pull the codes. As you start the capture process to retrieve the codes it gets a scan error, i.e ecm fault. I need to see if it will do the paper clip flash but havent had time to try.

I pulled the PCM and there is no corrossion, bent connections or hot spots. Guess I'll throw an ICM on it and try it.

Something is wrong with your scanner or the pcm, based on what you are saying, although this still may not be the root problem.

ok, because you smell a lot of gas...I have a theory, when you check the pressure, and its at 42 psi, when you turn the key off, does it by any chance go down...just leaks down eventually to 0....if so i would recommend taking a look at your pressure regulator. Mine went out, and the only way i could get it running, was if i feather the throttle while starting, and hold it at about 2000 RPM...good luck

Since it's a 94, i'm thinking its an OBD I system, if thats the case, you can retrieve codes using a paper clip. heres a website that may help with that process... http://xgamesj6.tripod.com/gmcodes.htm ALSO, could it be possible that maybe the spark plug wires got switched somewhere, and the firing order is off?

The DLC only has 3 pins in the connector...#6, 9 and 12, the rest are empty.

Tried a new ICM and no luck.
