Unhappy 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo

I have a 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo Targa with a G50 5-Speed transmission with 40,000 Miles. While driving on the highway about 80mph, I heard a single loud bang. There was no vibration and we weren't even sure it was from our vehicle when it happened. Within 2 or 3 minutes we lost power as if we were running out of gas or the engine was being starved, then the engine stalled. There were no visible signs of exhaust or engine smoke, or fluids coming from the car and no other noises associated with the failure. Trying to restart, the engine turned over, but we were unable to start the vehicle and eventually had to be towed home. There was no sign of any problems to that point, all guages and warning lights were normal and we had been driving for almost an hour. Unusually, when we started the car that day, there was a strong smell of gas, that lingered with us for most of the journey. We will be having the car moved to our local Porsche dealer, but are hoping someone may shed some light on what to expect. When I think of what it could be, it's somewhat scary, I guess it's the loud bang that has me anxious, as I have never experienced or heard anything like it before. Thank's for taking the time to respond.
