1997 Transmission Problems

First time in this forum, if it is like other forums I have been in, I know someone will have the solution to my problem.

For quite a while, the transmission in my 97 wife's Quest has had a problem with 2nd gear. I hope this makes sense to someone. The transmission works great, no slipping or such, but it almost always never has 2nd gear. It starts off in 1st jsut fine, winds out, winds out, then shifts into 3rd gear. 1st, 3rd, and OD work perfectly. Like I said, almost always never. Occasionally, after driving about 100 to 150 miles, it starts working. Also, when in the mountains, climbing hard in 3rd, all at once it will downshift to 2nd. Have done multiple fluid changes, never any debris in pan or filter.

Any ideas??

Lightbulb Re: 1997 Transmission Problems

I have the same problem with my wifes van, whines out in 1st gear jumps past second into 3rd. I found by feathering the pedal I can get it to shift into 3rd a little quicker and avoid taching out in 1st.
I'm searching for a solution now, lets colaborate! If you find out what the problem is please let me know. my e-mail is specops79@att.net. If I find out somthing I will let you know.

Re: 1997 Transmission Problems

Check for proper voltage on your TPS sensor and also for a ground on the transmission wiring. Sounds more like a TPS sensor going bad rather than the tranny

Question Re: 1997 Transmission Problems

I'm having a similar , if not the same , problem on my daughter's 1995 quest van . The TPS was replaced about a month ago but the tranny problem continues .When you start out from a complete stop , it doesn't seem to want to shift from 1st gear . The rpm's keep going up , letting off the throttle seems to help sometimes . Other times not so much ! When it does shift , I'm not sure if it's going into 2nd gear or.....what ? My question is this a sign of it needing a fluid and filter change ( it's probably long overdue ) or something else ? Any and all help will be truly appreciated !
