transmission fluid change to synthetic

My 05 Liberty has 20k on it and want to change to synthetic. What is the best way to remove all old fluid. I know the torque converter holds alot of fluid.

Re: transmission fluid change to synthetic

Most places do sell the ATF+4 instead of going to the dealer for it.I know Carquest does sell it.Transmission fluid and filter changes are recomended for 50,000 miles.

Re: transmission fluid change to synthetic

changing at 20,000 isn't going to hurt anything, but i would do multiple pan drops with a filter change. i have always been leary of flushes! you can also get a drain pan drain bolt kit from b&m to make it easier.

also be prepared for rough downshifts when you are done puting in the new fluid, these 42rle's are adaptive and when you go changing the fluid viscosity with new atf+4, the 42rle is not used to the less friction in the new fluid. consequently it takes a couple of weeks for the trans computer to adapt or relearn the new fluid.

if you have it done at the dealer they do a quick learn on the trans. so the trans computer doesn't have to adapt to the new fluid! mike

Re: transmission fluid change to synthetic

I am not a big fan of flushes at all and I do know one transmission shop that does lots of valve body cleanings and rebuilds due to flushes done with the Machine,It will say in the owner's manual saying when to change the transmission fluid,at least 50,000 miles. Some say the 42RLE is junk, the same transmission shop I know did 2 rebuilds so far and I know of one problem with them, the acumulator plate warps and the aftermarket sells an upgraded one.The 42RLE is a Dodge Intrepid/Chrysler Concorde transmission made into a rear wheel drive
