Rank the Japanese Automakers

In no particular order, please rank the Japanese Automakers in terms of overall quality, style and performance (keeping the "sub brands" separate - i.e. Honda / Acura):

- Acura
- Honda
- Infiniti
- Lexus
- Mazda
- Mitsubishi
- Nissan
- Subaru
- Suzuki
- Toyota

um since it was founded in Japan, is still headquartered in Japan, and Ford's ownership is still under 50%.

at any rate, that is your contribution?

Re: Rank the Japanese Automakers

Its really hard to rank all these with all three combined. I think the list would be very very different if you did them separately.

I'm not sure why you listed the brands as the manufacturers.

In any case

Honda,
Toyota,
Nissan,
Subaru,
Mitsubishi

the rest are of no consequence

Re: Rank the Japanese Automakers

I hate to generalize but...

Honda/Acura- too close for me to seperate, the Accord is the best of the family sedans, Civic is an icon, the NSX was a great sub-supercar, the S2000 is still a great roadster, the Integra/RSX were good, inexpensive coupes.

Lexus- Personally, I hate them, there has yet to be a Lexus that I liked more then the BMW alternative. Their upcoming sub-supercar looks to be garbage. They lack the creativity that the other luxury brands have. That said, if I were recommending a luxury car to someone else, it would probably be a Lexus. Reliability and comfort are hard to beat.

Toyota- Again, I could never see myself buying one since they are so boring, but their reliability speaks for itself. Toyota was pretty great in the 90's with the 2nd generation MR2, mk. IV Supra TT, and various Celicas. Camry is the best selling car in America with good reason.

Infiniti- The big up-and-coming Japanese brand. Started producing much better cars since the Nissan/Renault merger. G35 is the closest thing to a 3-series BMW, and the M35/M45 is as close as you can get to a BMW 5-series. They are still a bit young and lack a proper sports car.

Mazda- Rather middle of the road as far as I'm concerned. Miata is a modern icon. RX-8 was a bit of a letdown compared to the old FD3S RX-7. Mazda6 and Mazda3 are good alternatives to the everyday Accords, Camrys, Civics, and Corollas.

Subaru- Great if you need AWD, rather pointless if you dont. WRX and WRX STI are good cars with outrageous insurance rates.

Nissan- Never liked Nissan and I don't really know why. They've struggled behind Honda and Toyota for a long time. The Z cars are in need of a new generation. Sentra is still terrible as far as I'm concerned.

Mitsubishi- Japanese styling without the Japanese reliability. Utterly pointless vehicles. Evolution is good, but I'd rather a S2000, 350z, or even the upcoming BMW 135i.

Suzuki- Why can't they make cars like their motorcycles?

Re: Rank the Japanese Automakers

honda - more entertaining to drive than a toyota
toyota - can't argue that they're solid cars in spite of the lack of thrill.
nissan - no big complaints on my end, just no big compliments either.
mazda - forget that ford has anything to do with this company. they're
an up and coming force to reckon with when it comes to competing with
the above 3
subaru - would be a couple notches higher if i lived where it snows a lot. awd
may be the craze right now but i don't see the urgent need for it where i
live. needs a broader product line to really capture honda/toyota buyers.
mitsubishi - somewhere along the line they went off track. nothing all that
terrible with these cars but there's better.
suzuki - no interest in the cars.

Re: Rank the Japanese Automakers

it pointless putting the brands in order without giving a good reason as to why they're in that slot....

I like what the last two have done.... given reasons....

My order would be....
  1. Toyota - Great Engines, comfortable, bulletproof reliability, but lacks in excitement and sometimes cheap interior feel. Still takes No. 1 though
  2. Nissan - Some would be surprised to see Nissan in the second slot, but in my book, they've got it going well. Just can't match the marketing of toyota. The Nissan Patrol is the king of the desert here. Alot more powerful than the land Cruiser, and if you look at the news... what does the UN drive???.... Nissan. Reliable and Durability with comfort. The cars do not have performance, except for the Altima / Maxima series, but they do offer smooth comfortable rides.
  3. Honda - Exciting, great engines (but they lack torgue) and reliable. To date there has not been a Vtec engine reported as failed. Remarkable achievement in my book, but where they excel in power and handling, they lack in ride comfort.
  4. Mazda - I can personally vouch for this brand. My dad owned a mazda when I was a kid. We put the car through hell and it never let us down. Parts fell off the car at times, yet it never stopped on the road... not once. My dad in the end bought a second Mazda just recently. While the new compact models lack in performance, ride is comfortable and the cars are durable. As for sportscars, RX8 is great. A seriously good car when you think of the practicality n performance package all rolled into one car.
  5. Subaru - I agree with the rest. AWD is great and unless you're going in for the WRZ Sti, I wouldn't reccommend it. The build quality is absolutely good, performance is good, ride is smooth. By far the best interior feel of the Japanese brands
  6. Mitsubishi - If you're going in for the Pajero or the Evo, then buy one. The pajero has proven to be a giant buster in rallies and here in the desert. Where Toyotas / Nissans rely on 8 cylinder engines, the Pajero goes comfortable with just 6. The EVO, a super saloon capable of doing a lap as fast as a Lamborghini, the by far the most reccommended of the Mitsubishi range. Galant is buy far the only decent car of the rest. But the whole range makes up for the lack of performance in terms of good ride and reliablility even though their interior does feel like its made from cheap stuff. Toyota has a better feel than it.
