My '86 528e had aftermarket 225/50HR16 tires (Toyo) when I bought it. When the time came to replace them, I bought some 225/50WR16 Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 high performance tires, with which I was extremely pleased. They had a great-looking tread pattern, were very quiet, had great grip, and also performed excellently in the rain. I don't know how well they wore, as I sold the car about 5 months after getting the new tires.
I also replaced the long-wearing (80,000 miles) Firestone tires on my Acura Legend with Z-rated Kumho touring tires. Again, the new tires were not only a bit quieter, but there was a NOTICEABLE increase in handling sharpness and especially grip. Unfortunately I was forced to part with the car only a month or so after the tires were mounted. My current 535i has stock Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus tires (wimpy H-rated), but I look forward to probably replacing them with Kumhos when the time comes. Kumho tires are Korean-manufactured, but despite their very competitive price seem well able to compete with name-brand, expensive tires like Pirelli, Bridgestone and Michelin. Definitely visit www.tirerack.com!! This is probably your best resource for purchasing tires--plus they can ship directly to whatever shop you prefer having install your tires. They rate tires by various performance characteristics, allow side-by-side comparisons, and let you read hundreds of reviews by people who have purchased specific brands/models. |
