Manual 6 spd trans slipping
Hi,
I have a 89 convertable which has a problem developing with the 6 spd man trans. While rolling at say 40 and you step hard on the gas the engine revs but there is a huge lag in response. When I let off of the gas you hear a sort of belt squeal. Any ideas what could be happening? This has just started happening after sitting in the garage for the winter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance any assistance given. ffjohnny |

Re: Manual 6 spd trans slipping
The slow response and increase rev's sounds like a slipping clutch.
The squeal when you let off makes me think 'bearing' - shaft input, or shaft output. I can't imagine why both would begin to fail at the same time tho'... Have you checked the gear fluid level? How has clutch pedal action felt of late? |

Re: Manual 6 spd trans slipping
Thanks for the answers.
I will have to check the fluid. It was my dad's and he passed in the fall so I have not driven it too much before now too know if it is different or not. It was difficult to put into gear (not impossible though) and I thought this might be normal. Is the clutch difficult or expensive to replace? Could the sound be the clutch engaging as I let off of the gas? Does a manual have bands like an auto does? Is it safe to drive. I don't feel any problems until I get on the gas. Yes it is a 6 speed. Is this unusual? The car is stock and I know it is the original trans. Thanks again, John |

The clutch doesn't engage (or disengage) as you let off the gas. BUT, the load changes on the tranny shaft as you let off of the gas. And if you have a bad or dry shaft input bearing or shaft output bearing, and the load changes, THEN you could get a piercing squeal. Quote:

Check the tranny fluid - carefully (does this thing have hydraulic or mechanical clutch release?), and get the pedal linkage checked out for clutch release. I think that's the only thing that wouldn't necessitate pulling the motor. There's a remote chance of an electrical problem - I have no idea what stick functions of a six-shooter are electrically controlled. Anybody else? Re: Manual 6 spd trans slipping
Just for an update. It was the clutch. The mechanic said it was down to the rivots.
Thanks for the help. |
