73 nova overheating no one knows why?plz help
ok i have a 1973 nova which overheats really easily i cant go far without it shuting off instantly. i took it to like five mechanics and all told me differents things and i ve fixed them and now its gotten worse if i start it up for like 10 mins then shut it off and try to turn it on like five mins after it has a hard time turning over when like 15 mins before it started up right away so if any one can help me it will be a great help thx for readin

More info please. What engine do you have, new, rebuilt, old, etc. Does it have headers? What did you fix? Has anything been done lately to the engine? How hot does the engine get?
Just a couple ideas: Do you have the proper fan shroud? My Nova would reach 220 until I put the proper shroud on. Now it stays aroud 180. Also, if you run headers and they are close to the starter, the heat from the headers can make the starter slow cranking the engine over when hot.

yea headers close to the starter no good. Sometimes it wont even crank over.

I agree, sounds like the starter is getting too hot.You can buy an insulation cover for the starter to help with the heat issue. Or look into wrapping the headers to absorb some of the heat. That should take care of the cranking issue.
If you're overheating, try flushing the radiator, those old radiators can clog up easy and prevent good flow of the coolant. Also try a different thermostat maybe. |
