Exclamation Jeep wont start after cleaning throttle and IAC

hello everyone, my used to start before i cleaned my IAC and throttle..

i removed the IAC and clean the tip/head with brake cleaner...

then while having the throttle visible (not removed from engine) i decided to spray the butterfly and the inside, i opened the throttle and did a good spray with brake cleaner.. after putting everything back and tried to start it up it would just crank but not start. a lot of smoke came from the exhaust..i then tried again with stepping on the gas a little and it did turn on but i have to have my foot on the gas in order to keep it running..

any ideas on how to make it turn on again?

The smoke from the exhaust was the brake cleaner burning in your engine.

You might have killed the IAC with the brake cleaner -- IAC is Idle Air Controller if I'm not mistaken, so your Liberty not idling but running when you step on the gas indicates an issue there.

Before you replace it, consider getting some sensor friendly intake cleaner, and cleaning the IAC with that.

hi, thank you for your reply, now im getting more worried, will the brake cleaner that i put in there damage the engine? i went to autozone to get a cleaner for the IAC, but they told me to not use any type of cleaner as its a sensor, and all sensors are very sensitive with water etc... they say to replace it, the part costs about 60 bucks, i bought a BODY throttle and air intake cleaner.. (CRC brand).. can i use that? thanks so much, my car has been dead for a day now, i wasnt even able to go to work since that is the only car i have...

thanks

Your engine is probably fine, although IMO you'll need to pay the $60 for the new sensor.

When using throttle body cleaners, make sure they say "sensor safe".

Re: Jeep wont start after cleaning throttle and IAC

Okay i fixed the problem.

it was the IAC liked you said, but what was wrong with it, is that the spring and the plastic on top of the spring in the IAC was stuck, i guess when i tried to put it back after cleaning. the spring moved and made it get stuck..

car is now fine.. idling at 680-690 RPM...

i did diagnostic test and got this codes (since i have engine light on) p0505 and p0455.

i had this same codes before i moved anything though, the reason i tried to clean the IAC and throttle was because i was told on another website, that the p0505 code means that i have a faulty IAC. they said to try clean the throttle and the IAC first before considering replacement.

How can i know if my IAC is still good or needs replacement?

the p0455... it says EVAP large leak.. i have a little knowledge of cars, and im not familiar with the terms and etc.. but i like to try new things and learn. What does EVAP mean.. and also what about the Large leak. I checked Fuel Cap and its good. the Purge Solenoid Valve could be another possibility.. how do i know if thats the problem? for my second code.

Thanks so much for the help!!

Re: Jeep wont start after cleaning throttle and IAC

The EVAP is a canister, usually black, about the size of a coffee can. Not sure of exact location on your vehicle, but it's usually on the fender wells or near the radiator. It will have several vacuum lines running to and from it. You're probably getting the evap code from one of the lines leaking.

This could affect your IAC, if it's not getting the correct signal. I'd look for and replace the bad vacuum line (maybe replace them all? It's cheap), clear the codes and see if the IAC code resurfaces. 600 is a bit slow on the idle, mine idles about 8-900 when warmed up.
