Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

It's possible that what oil filter you use has nothing to do with how long your engine will last. That said, if you use Fram, you owe it to yourself to do some research. If you're obsessive enough about your truck to be reading about oil filters, you probably want a well-made product. At the very least, there are equal or better filters available for less money. Cut a Fram open and compare it to an AC Delco or a Wix, or even a Valucraft from Autozone. (A can opener will work at least once, but don't plan to use it on cans anymore.) Check out the Oil Filters forum on bobistheoilguy.com. A member named "lubeowner" has posted a lot of photos of Frams with tears through the media.

I use AC Delco PF59 on my '01 5.3--that's the "long" filter, not the thimble-sized one. I cut the last one open after 7200 miles and it looked fine--the media, glue, and seams were all intact.

To recap what somebody said earlier:

Fram=Pennzoil.

AC Delco, Bosch, Mobil 1, Super Tech (Wal-Mart), STP, K&N, and Valucraft (Autozone) are all made by the same company (Champion Labs), but there may be differences in things like the type and amount of filter media depending on the brand.

Wix makes Napa and Carquest filters, at least the premium models.

Purolator makes the Pepboys house brand, Quaker State and some Motorcraft filters. I think the Valvoline Maxlife filter is a Purolator, too. Like the Champion brands, there can be some differences. Pure One gets good marks for filtering ability and has a silicone antidrainback valve.

I "think" Amsoil filters are Baldwins.

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

If it is a GM keep it GM. Use AC-delco oil filters.
For over 45 years I have saw people have oil pressure problems on start or running on the road when they use fram filters.
I can not understand why they would even think about using them.
Even if it saves a few cents it Does not make sense to me.

Just put that in becasue when I check for new posts this thread pops up even if someone only voted. If I made the last post, I know the thread has a "new post" if someone voted.

Re: what oil filter do you guys use??

I've used K & N 3002's for the last couple hundred thousand miles, no problems. Also Castrol Syntec 10W-30. 5W-30 in my replacement stroker 383, installed at 370,000 - total mileage now 405,000.

Pep Boys and Kragen (sister company to Checker and Schuck's) both stock fairly complete coverage for American vehicles, certainly V-8 Chevies!

For my three older, out-of-warranty BMWs I like Purolator and Purolator One. Would recommend if you want to spend about $5 or less.

Can't beat AC delco for $3.49! I have been using the super techs in my beater and most recently my grizzly. Hell of a filter for 2.07! Just can't bring myself to put a walmart filter on my truck! LOL ps, mobil 1 in everything but the lawn mowers!

I keep hearing good things about Mobil 1. I am wondering how well it does as compared to Royal Purple, because it is considerably cheaper.
