Is there a type of way to do it or just mix water with black paint?
I thought I'd take a break from papermodeling to.

it's the simplest way but you have to avoid glossy paint and oil based paint, I use a mat black water based paint from Citadel as already mentioned, and it works great.
if result doesn't please, just repaint the metalic base color and restart washing or just brush with water before paint dries...!
really simple and guaranted effects !!
Just try it.
another tip: if you don't have figures or modeling water based color, you can use the colors range used by small kids in school workshops. Don't know the english word for it but in french we call it "gouache".
I use this technic with several tones of colors to give used effect or burnt look etc etc.
