start by checking for spark & fuel.a shot of carb cleaner in carb will give
you an idea if its a fuel problem

First check to see if the timing belt is still intact. Remove the distributor cap and have someone turn the key to the start positon while you observe the rotor. If the rotors spins when the engine rotates, the timing belt is OK. If it does not spin, the timing belt is broken. If the timing belt is still intact, I would then check for fuel and spark as inafogg suggested.

Re: 1986 camry ngine just stopped

Checking the ignition rotor is a sure fire way to determine if a timing belt is broken but a quicker way to at least get a wag on if it's broken or not is to just listen to the engine rotate as you crank it.

When the belt is broken the valve train won't move leaving most if not all of the valves open. With the valves open zero compression is produced. Since there's no compression pressure created the engine has no force to overcome as it spins when you crank it. Your engine will spin much faster than usual. Listen for that "high speed spin".

Check the ignition coil, especially if it is the original part. Pretty common to go out.
