96 accord-Front discs removal question

Once again I need your help badly. I did a search but found nothing specific for my 96 EX. I am currently working in the rack and pinion boot but decided to do the brakes and rotors. I removed the caliper and the 36 mm axle nut; however, the rotors seems to be pressed in. I even loosen up the four bolts in the backing plate or dust shield. Can someone tell me how to get them off? What I though it was going to be an easy project is turning into a nightmare, and unfortunately, I have have anything done due to this rotor dilemma.

Thanks for your help,

Joe

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

1990-95 Accord
See Figures 4 and 5
  1. If equipped with an air bag, disconnect the negative battery cable and properly disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), as detailed in Chassis Electrical .
  2. Loosen the lug nuts, then Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. Please refer to Suspension & Steering for procedures.
  5. Remove the 4 bolts retaining the hub unit to the steering knuckle and remove the hub unit.

Fig. 4: Remove the 4 bolts retaining the hub unit to the steering knuckle and remove the hub unit/rotor assembly
  1. Remove the 4 bolts, then separate the hub unit from the brake rotor.

Fig. 5: Remove the 4 bolts, then separate the hub unit from the brake rotor

To install:
  1. Assemble the disc to the hub unit and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  2. When installing the hub to the knuckle, use new self-locking bolts and tighten them to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  3. Install the steering knuckle.
  4. Lower the vehicle and check for proper brake operation.
  5. If equipped, enable the SRS system and connect the negative battery cable.
Pretty sure '96 is the same...

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

Thank you for your help. I know now that I can tackle the job. I am glad I did not hammer the rotor out out of frustation. That is why is taking me longer to complete this job. I walk away from the car and start fresh to avoid frustation.

Mhhh.... What book are you referring to? I have HAYNES and is not as specific or detailed as yours.

I also visited the links provided in your post and found helpful DIY guides.

Thank you again,

Joe

www.autozone.com

They have good repair and parts location info (Autozone owns Alldata) but not always up to date, i.e. they only go to 1995 for Accords...

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

All I needed was a helping advice from a knowledgeable forum member. It worked like a charm with a little help from a w40 can. I was able to remove the discs to have them turn. I took several pictures to document my experience and help those that need it. I will post them in a couple of days along with the write-up.

Thanks again.

One more question, to replace the boot from the steering knuckle all I have to do is remove the tie-rod? I am not sure but I will appreciate any input.

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

Should be. Make sure you mark it AND count the turns as you take it off, so alignment will be the same after you put it back on...you can also use the jambnut to mark the tie rod end's position on the threads...the more ways you verify it, the more correct it'll be.

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

Might make the humble suggestion of getting new rotors. I tried turning mine and they warped again almost immediately. I got brembo stainless slotted rotors and have had great warp free breaks for over 100,000 more miles.

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

Brembo sounds good. How much did you pay for the upgrade brake system, and how hard was to do the brake system swap? And I guess, it is really worthy it due to the fact that you have them for over 100K w/o warping. Not to mention the peace of mine added with the stopping power.

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

brembos were $70 each at the time I got them Vs $30 each for the cheap ones - but given the PITA they are to swap on the Accord, I figured it was worth it. Note: these were the same size rotor, stock replacement. If you start searching "brake system upgrades" you're going to see big$. These kits usually mean larger diameter rotors, new calipers, and will lead to needing the correct wheels to clear them.

Re: 96 accord-Front discs removal question

Sure it was a PITA to change them. I have installed the old ones already but when if I have to remove them again, I will spend the $70.00 and get the brembo.

Initially, I though that you got the whole brembo brake system. I didn't know I have the option to get just the rotors. Thanks.
