Camshafts out of sync

I have a 2001 zx2. The timing belt broke. I set the crank to TDC but Ford does not put timing marks on the camshafts. I need to know where the cam lobes should be when the engine is at TDC.

Re: Camshafts out of sync

Welcome to AF. You need to install a camshaft alignment tool to hold the camshafts in the proper position prior to installing the belt. This is a bar that fits into the slots at the rear of the camshaft. You can make a similar tool from flat bar stock or angle iron. Just make sure it fits snugly into the camshaft grooves. Don't use to hold the camshaft while taking the pullys off. It make damage the camshafts. The mark on the crankshaft can be either TDC of the exhaust stroke or TDC on the compression stroke. Make sure the #1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke by taking out the plugs and feeling for compression on the plug hole of cylinder #1 as you are coming up on the mark.

Re: Camshafts out of sync

Ok I have the crank at TDC. I have the cams set into place. new belt is on. It is still bucking when I try to start. would it have something to do with the variable timing camshaft? or should I replace the cam and crankshaft sensors first and see what happens?

After you set the camshafts did you roll it over by hand and make sure everything still lines up you may have made a mistake.
