restoration vs. sell as is?
New member, really doing a favor for a friend of mine. His father has a 1946 silver wraith sedanca de ville by h.j. mulliner (it was the last coach-built rolls model).* short wheel based with a divider between passenger/driver and sunroof. It has been in the garage in the Cleveland area for a long time and I don't think it's been take care of, except for being covered up. He's trying to see whether he should restore it and enjoy it or sell it as is to someone who'd appreciate it. Does anyone know what the value of this car would be? Also, would anyone have any information on a reputable place in the Cleveland area which could perform a good restoration project? Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: restoration vs. sell as is?
Don't do any bodywork or paint, just clean and polish it up as much as possible yourself without resorting to a spray gun (except maybe for flat black inside the fenders, etc.).
Mechanically, see if you can get it to run. This is the big mechanical dividing line for most buyers. At a minimum it will amost surely need a new battery. Make sure the brakes work, but don't worry about lights or turn signals. Once the car will start and drive, and is in clean but original (unrestored) condition, you can offer it as an intact, running project. This description should attract the most buyers and $$$ vs. the minimal amount you will invest in preparation. If it doesn't attract enough money, you may want to restore it yourself on an affordable schedule. |

Re: restoration vs. sell as is?
I think that should should reatpre as much as you can without going over the amount of money you will get for selling the car.
this will mean you can ask more although you won't get as much profit. If you didn't care how much it went for try selling it on ebay they are good for making money if you are willing to take a risk. My family did and they made a large profit. Although if you want to get rid of it i would do the same as sub006. |

Re: restoration vs. sell as is?
i work for a rolls, bently restoration specialists and we do about a dozen of these things a year i just started working for them and over the past 2.5 months i have torn down 4 of these cars and installed and redone 2 interiors on these vintage rolls, bently cars and because of the wood and leather interior they need to be real careful on handleing the parts during installation because if trying to keep all original the leather can be brought back and the wood can also be brought back but great care needs to be put in re-assembly if you would like you could call my shop my boss would probably pick up ypur car but im not certian i know he has gone prettty far to pick up cars before his name is walt moyer 540-636-6110 we might pick it up and deliver once completed but you would have to talk to him we have a web site you could check out i think its moyermotorcars.com but you should be able to google us and find it we offfer complete resto service from paint and body to mechanical re-builds

Re: restoration vs. sell as is?
whatever you do do not take any paint to the inside fenders this will bring down the value of the car if anything just clean it you could use a presure washer if you feel you need to but cover any electronic parts with plastic alot of poeple like to use flat black paint as a cheap way of cleaning up an area that doesnt look so good but sometimes it can do more damage than good if homework is not done on the vehicle prior to doing so.
