Astina SP Fuel Filter Installation

I am after advise regarding replacing the fuel filter in a 1990 Astina SP. This may seem obvious however, I'm not convinced of the direction flow of the filter and can't find any information about it.

When I bought this car second hand, the fuel filter was located with the thick end at the top. This way of fitting appears to fit the bracket correctly etc. What has me confused is that the thick end has IN pressed into the metal of the filter and OUT on the thinner or bottom end. The fuel line that connects to the injectors is attached to the IN end of the filter and the fuel line that appears to come from the fuel pump is connected to the OUT end. Is this the correct way to fit the filter and am I just confusing OUT with IN?

Any help would be appreciated.
