What are some weak points of an RB26DETT?
As the name says, What are some weakpoints of the RB26 motor assembly? Some pieces are good for 800hp, while others crap out at 300. What are some weakpoints the RB26 has suffered?

Re: What are some weak points of an RB26DETT?
Intake design, crap. #6 gets too much air and goes lean.
number 3 mains have oiling problems at higher rpms. The trans syncros suck, not too mention 3rd is weak, because of the gear being offset. There are some other issues, but I cannot think of them. RB26s are very well built engines for the most part, and without diving into the internals you can have a stock engine lats a long time at the 500hp range. When you go over that, the weak point will show up, but most of it will depend on its tune, except for the trans.

My 4th gear synchro is shagged out (but that's a gearbox issue), but the car came like that from Japan. Actually it came over with alot of things broken and needing repair / rebuild.
I've never heard anything bad about the RB26DETT, actually it is renowned for its strength on the track. Provided your looking after it though, any engine will break if your doing something very wrong.

Early R32 RB's have a narrow oil pump drive. Later R32's have a wider drive. At high revs - like a missed shift - you can break the oil pump drive. #6 cylinder is the lean hole, and you can and will spin a bearing/break a piston. The headgasket is paper, however I have done about 700 rwhp on a stock headgasket. It all depends on what you are doing with the motor. All stock, with good fuel and a good tune - 500 hp isnt an issue. Above that, you start to run into different issues. There are so many parts available, so many fixes available, that you dont hear about the issues too much. I have broken many, and I have talked to a lot of people that have broken them, so I know. |

Re: What are some weak points of an RB26DETT?
the stock turbos can be an issue because the ceramic turbines will implode after 1.2-1.3 bar of boost

Not really implode. The ceramic exhaust wheel is bonded to the metal turbo shaft. The ceramic wheel breaks off on the exhaust side. Mostly due to detonation |
