Never Fear, Rich is here!

The Automatic tranny in my 91 323 1.6L is shot. I have decided to put a standard in there, instead of rebuilding the automatic. I am a personal fan of standard trannys anyways. I want to find out if anyone knows what years of these cars I can use the standard from because I have spent some time at the local junkyard and there no 91's but there are quite a few 323's that have standard trannys that seem to be in good shape. Anyone who has done this or a similar swap, please write your experiances, I want to see what I have gotten myself into.
Thanks In Advance Rich "Tha HuMMerMan" C cooprich@hotmail.com |

This is slightly different, but possibly still relevant. I have a '91 Ford Escort, which is essentially the same as the 323. I have the Ford 1.9, but I had to change my tranny and got one from a '96 1.8, which is a 323 engine. I'm not sure when Mazda changed the 323, but I would assume that any tranny from '91 to at least '96 would PROBABLY fit. Many junkyards have compatibility charts...I would check with them to see what tranny's will fit your engine, and axle shafts as well. Just a little info, probly not much help.
