Transmission Driveshaft Issue

Hi all. I'm new here and hoping to get my problem solved.
I just bought my nephews 3000gt. He took very good care of it and I actually helped him with a tune up 2 years ago with it so I know the car a little. On to my problem. Last summer he blew the transmission (5-speed) on it and had it replaced with one from a 91 Stealth. The drive shaft has 3 pieces. The first was on the Stealth tranny and the 2nd and 3rd were on the 3000GT. The 2nd will not connect to the first. The 2nd shaft from the stealth was destroyed when they pulled the tranny. So for a year now he's let the car sit not fixing it. So now he has a kid and doesn't want the car. I bought it knowing all this assuming it shouldn't be that big of a problem. I do not have the car in my garage yet to really go over it good. I'm just trying to get some research into getting this this driving again. It runs great and I know the Mech who swapped trannies so I know its OK. The kid just ran out of money to fix it and just stored it for a year. Soooooooo Could it be different year trannies/driveshaft issues? Or maybe even spline count issues? ANY and all help would be great. Thanks.

Re: Transmission Driveshaft Issue

You need 91-92 axles. The 93+ had a larger differential.

Unless I'm wrong (probably) I thought the driveshaft went into the differential and the axles went into the differential so why would i need 91-92 axles when my 93 drive shaft to 91 transmission is where my problem is? Once I have the car up in my garage I might see what your saying but most of my work is with Jeeps so I'm confused. Thanks

Re: Transmission Driveshaft Issue

The differential is in the transmission on FWD (based) vehicles. Thats why they are called transaxles. Granted there are a few RWD transaxles but all FWD transmissions are transaxles.

So again, you need a 91-92 passenger CV axle and a 91-92 drivers side intermediate/jack shaft.

Thanks for the explanation and your help. It all makes sense now.

Sorry me again- - - Does it matter if the axels are from autos or do they have to be from manuals?

Re: Transmission Driveshaft Issue

The intermediate/jack shaft definitely has to be manual because the automatic one is longer, and I am pretty sure and Advance Auto seems to verify the passenger axle also has to be from a manual.

Re: Transmission Driveshaft Issue

OK, I finally got the car and I have the '91 axles for it. But what is the name of the part that goes from the transmission/differential and connects to the axle shaft? It's about 16 inches long and has a bracket that bolts to the frame/motor. The bracket has a bearing in it for (I'm assuming) support. This also has to be replaced with a 91-92 year. I just need to know what part name to start looking for. Thanks.

Re: Transmission Driveshaft Issue

Its either called a jack shaft or intermediate shaft.

I think Mitsu calls in inner shaft left or something like that.

Re: Transmission Driveshaft Issue

Any one know a web site or just anyone that has a intermediate/half shaft for a 1991 5 speed transmission? These things are proving hard to find. Thanks
